Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Cowards, they had plenty of time to adapt and prepare themselves.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 11 points 2 days ago

With this change they would only harm the companies that did in fact prepare.

Yay!

Fuck the planet! I only care about profits that don't go to me!

[–] kossa@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

That's the worst part about our corrupt politicians: they are crazy cheap.

Like, come on, if you're already selling our future for your personal gain, make it expensive. Show me that that future was worth something.

They take some crumbs, still cannot go pissing with the billionaires who pay them off.

It this point I'm not sure what will happen. They might announce something which actually changes nothing (there never was a ban after all) or could throw the automotive industry into an even greater chaos than they already are.

I would not be surprised, if this was just meant to get subsidies for EVs. The none Chinese competition outside the EU is mostly pretty weak. Hyundai is doing well, but the Japanese do not have good EVs and the Americans only Tesla. In China the EV market is a blood bath. The companies surviving that will be strong, but who cares if the competition is called BYD or Toyota.

Oh and most of the chaos is getting rid of combustion engine related stuff. It seems stupid to me to close those factories now, when you expect the market to be open until 2040.

Too late, we shifted to 100% electric last week. πŸ˜€
We bought the first electric we tried, because it's such an amazing drive, we didn't feel a need to look any further. πŸ˜‹

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What did you buy and which member state, if you feel comfortable telling us?

We bought a 4 year old VW ID.4 Performance Pro Tech with 77 kWh battery.
We live in Denmark.

The number of included extras is insane, The Tech version of the car is the highest in included extras, like "phantom pedal" to open the rear hatch, premium sound system, sound and IR insulated windows, heated front window to avoid fogging, super comfortable electric adjustable front seats, tinted rear windows, heat pump, IQ Matrix light, 360Β° camera, HUD, Electric trailer hook, area lighting, panorama roof.

Absolutely amazing car, and being 4 years old it's less than half price! πŸ˜€
And the car still feels as new!

Thanks for all the info! I've heard good stuff and seen a few id.3s, this one's a bit larger?

heated front window to avoid fogging

Damn, I'd love that.

Absolutely amazing car, and being 4 years old it’s less than half price!

One of my bosses used to say "never buy a new car. The mere act of buying it reduces its value significantly."

Incidentally the first EV owner I had a long conversation with was Danish as well. That was almost 10 years ago, and it was a Tesla :(

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's quite a bit larger than the ID.3, and the ID.3 body isn't built for pulling a trailer.
https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/volkswagen-id3-2019-5-door-hatchback-vs-volkswagen-id4-2020-suv/

If we didn't need the ability to have the trailer, we could have had an ID.3 for about half what this one cost. The ID.3 is very good value.

Yes we have a lot of Swasticars (Tesla) driving around here, I think we are only beat by Norway in that regard. But Tesla sales have halved this year, and Tesla just dropped the price of the model 3 by 15%! From what I hear Tesla cars have very expensive insurance, more than twice what our car, my guess is they have to many accidents, because their assist systems are faulty.

One of my bosses used to say β€œnever buy a new car.

Unless you are loaded. πŸ˜‹ One of my neighbors bought a new BMW i4 2 years ago, that can do 0-100 km/h in about 5 seconds. The insurance for that car is about 40% more than our car! Something to consider IMO, except of course if you are loaded.
We examined the market pretty thoroughly before buying this car, but Tesla was absolutely 100% excluded. But almost every other brand was considered.

Pulling a trailer is a valid concern for many people around me (rural Finland). I don't quite see the need (until I move I guess) but I decided to buy something slightly larger than an id.3/Yaris (wider, longer, but not higher) because it should be safer to drive on snow.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Different people different priorities, it's nice we have so many options to choose between.
Personally I feel privileged that we can afford what I consider a luxury car. Our neighbors drive even more expensive cars, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. But they also use their cars way more than we do, and to be honest I like our car better, because we bought it to meet our needs and wishes.
Practical needs first, wishes second within how much you are willing to spend. That's what we did, and I think it worked out super well for us.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure most BMW/Volvo/Mercedes drivers are more concerned with prestige than actual durability or how suitable their car is fro their use case, and I'm just as sure that the brand itself says very little about the quality or durability of the car.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

That may be true in many cases, but I can assure you, that my neighbors all have bought cars to suit their needs too.
The Volvo was chosen among cars that can pull a heavy 1800 kg. trailer.
The BMW was chosen as the EV with best range on the motorway with 130 km/h, as he drives almost 300km daily. He has strong preconditions that Tesla and Chinese are not considered options at all.
The Mercedes was similarly chosen for high durability and comfort because the owner drives more than 300 km several times a week, and being a consultant for NOVO I suppose it is also a reflection of his business. Kind of like jobs that require you to wear a suit. They have 2 cars, and the other car is a Nissan, so there you go. πŸ˜‹

The article is from Saturday, but it seems like none of the large EU news source have managed to confirm it with their own sources.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Senior industry leaders have confirmed that Brussels will revise its 2035 ban on the sale of cars powered by internal combustion engines, although the timing of the announcement is yet to be confirmed.

β€œI have it on good authority that the EU is going to add five years on to the current 2035 to make the date 2040, Which would mean that from January 1, 2040, all new vehicles would need to be pure electric,” said Tim Tozer, UK chairman of the insurer and roadside-assistance firm Allianz Partners, and former country head of Vauxhall, Mazda and Mitsubishi.

So the only thing that is confirmed is that there will be a revision.

The rest is "senior industry leaders" spreading rumor that suits them.

That said, the scenario unfortunately isn't unrealistic with Germany going the way it's going right now, and the EU-wide ongoing USA bootlicking.
