Henry Cuellar launched House re-election bid as Democrat days after Trump pardoned him over bribery charges

Days after issuing him a pardon, Donald Trump criticized US House member Henry Cuellar of Texas for deciding to run for re-election as a Democrat.

Trump pardoned Cuellar and the congressman’s wife on Wednesday as they faced bribery charges. They were alleged to have accepted thousands of dollars from Azerbaijan and a Mexican bank in exchange for advancing their interests.

Shortly after the pardon, Cuellar filed for re-election as a Democrat and said he had no intention of changing his party.

Lmfao. Fuck Democrats if they let him back in. But still the snub is hilarious.

This is a ploy. Cuellar publicly snubs Trump to appeal to anti-Trump voters and drag votes away from other, better candidates.

This is a grift/performance. Cuellar is a DINO and they know he can’t get elected as a Republican. He almost got primaried last time. Hopefully he gets kicked out this time.

Exactly. He is also more useful to trump with D next to his name.

Guy was found guilty of being bribed by foreign government. He clearly isn't there for Americans.

Is he gonna invalidate his pardon? Let's get that precedent on the books.

That guy is more useful to trump with D in front of his name.

I wouldn't trust any criminal, he should be primaried.

He went to jail because he was corrupted fuck, that was bribed by foreign government. He isn't there to help Americans but to enrich himself.

I so want him to do it to one of Biden's pardons like he was talking about.

So theyre at the “literally trying to pardon ~~alleged~~ crooks to maintain the house majority” stage huh?

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

That stage was there from beginning. Pretty much all people around trump are involved is some kind of corruption. Their loyalty is for sale.

Also this whole thing is just a spectacle, the guy would have no chance running as a Republican. We need to primary him.

He was pardoned so Democrats wouldn't put another candidate, God forbid a progressive.

Edit: looks like he already has record of voting with Republicans https://www.lonestarleft.com/p/goodbye-henry-cuellar

It's no longer alleged, you have to admit guilt to accept a pardon.

[–] Fondots@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

That is just not the case.

The case that people tend to cite when this comes up is Burdick vs United States, that determined that people can choose to decline a pardon.

And one of the reasons they gave for why someone may choose to refuse a pardon is because it can be seen as implying guilt.

Basically, some people will see you take the pardon and think "if he's innocent, why is he taking a pardon instead of seeking exoneration?"

But of course, if you know anything about the US "justice" system, that argument falls apart pretty fast.

Actually admitting guilt is not part of accepting a pardon, it's just that a lot of people think that it means you're guilty, and the pardoned people don't want to have people think that about them.

And of course spreading this kind of misinformation only makes that issue worse.

Ah yeah fair. Fixed!

Impeachable offense # 472628846272632. Abuse of power.

It's so much fucking fun watching shit happen daily that would have fox news frothing at the mouth and having every Republican forming committee investigations if it were a Democrat that did it...

Instead we have the Party of ~~no~~ Law and ~~disorder~~ Order acting as if it's all totally cool.

[–] Bhaelfur@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

That number seems low.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

With Trump, it's always, always, always about loyalty.

Democrats in whatever convoluted new district he's running in should be putting all of their efforts into finding better candidates to primary him
