The Interior Department has ordered national parks to review and remove gift shop items related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

This directive is part of a broader effort to keep park gift shops as "neutral spaces that serve all visitors."

The order follows executive actions by Donald Trump targeting DEI programs across the federal government.

National parks have been ordered to check their gift shops for items that support programs like diversity, equity and inclusion – and remove them.

WTF would those items be?

descriptions, depictions, or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times)

I see. So this is a Trump administration-mandated campaign to whitewash history.

It means you must not say that anyone except straight Christian white men has ever done anything good for the country.

[–] Doubleohdonut@lemmy.ca 9 points 13 hours ago

Ironically, irl whitewashing is often used to prepare surfaces to put colour on them.

to ensure that all public monuments, memorials, statues, markers, or similar properties within the Department of the Interior’s jurisdiction do not contain descriptions, depictions, or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times), and instead focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people.

It all sounds so goddamned Nazi. Because it is.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 9 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

So if you focus on the greatness of Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King, is that ok?

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Only way to highlight them is to highlight the "disparaging" context they had to work against. So I don't expect them to do that.

Their previous efforts to execute on this supposed narrative has been to wipe out any recognition of minorities and women.

Yes they are specific historical people that did things or advanced ideas we as a culture celebrate, like the notion of equality under the law.

The authoritarian playbook is to use a mystical, ill defined "great past" when a tribal "we" were "great" in all we did. No specifics. Greatness by God mandate.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Good thing there's plenty of appropriately disparaging things to say.

[–] MyMindIsLikeAnOcean@piefed.world 36 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Far-out.

By “neutral” they mean “don’t try to reflect your visitors in the gift shop, make sure everything is for white people”.

[–] Lazylazycat@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Literally the opposite of neutral 😑 Why are these folks so scared of other people existing?

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

It’s simple really. White folk, especially old white men, have done so many bad things for so long that there really isn’t much legitimate good things that they can take credit for anymore. Add to that a systemic lack of accountability, and you get a lot of fragile egos that don’t understand that part of life is a) apologizing, and 2) sitting with and thinking about the things that make you uncomfortable. So instead, they prop themselves up by bringing other people down, and removing the legitimate accomplishments of the people that in effect demonstrate how inferior these white old men genuinely are.

~i.e. they lack emotional maturity, emotional intelligence, and empathy.~

They also just changed the free admission days from Juneteenth to Donny's b-day. It would be grotesque if it wasn't so sad and enraging.

Every single incident needs to be documented, recorded, reported, stored safely.

It is, very publicly. Yet still there are people supporting him, proudly. I've officially lost faith in my fellow man because of this prick. Like his re-election broke me. I have no love anymore. I have no faith anymore. Just going to spend my time getting comfortably numb, and cooking. This morning is turnip greens and jasmine rice. It smells divine!

How could they vote for him twice? And slowly, partially wake up to what they voted for a year after the fact even though the writing was on the wall for almost a decade? Rhetorical questions. I'm pretty sure I heard all answers. Four years is a long time to fuck up a lot of things, many of them terminally. It is something to despair over.

My empathy.

What a colossal waste of time and energy this is.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 17 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Then where am I supposed to get Pattie Gonia dolls?
