I’ve been trying to be around 80:20 Canadian:International this year. The Hip, Stompin’ Tom, Gord Lightfoot, Neil Young, Stan Rogers, Guess Who, Rush, all on rotation. Probably more I’m missing. Honestly, Jesse Welles is probably the only American artist I listened to for more than a few minutes this year, except for a bit of Johnny Cash.
Mind you, that’s just for streaming. I listen to a lot of records, and those are more diverse. But when it comes to supporting artists, I try to stick to Canadian for the most part. I just can’t quit Jesse Welles, his music is too good. I’m also going to see him live next year too, I’m pretty excited.
Metric and The Tea Party are both pretty good for alt rock, although I'm bored to death of the one or two songs each get on the radio.
Of Montreal is my favorite. Not as much their new stuff, but 2004-2012 I looooove.
Man, the Canadian indie scene was crazy in the early to mid 2000s:
- Arcade Fire
- Broken Social Scene
- Of Montreal
- Metric
- Stars
- Feist
- Godspeed You, Black Emperor!
- Wolf Parade
- Death From Above 1979
- Neko Case
- Destroyer
Just absolutely nuts what was happening up here for a while.
For more modern alt there's the Arkells of course, and July Talk are incredible. Anyone who hasn't checked them out absolutely needs to; imagine if Tom Waits and Metric formed a supergroup and then added just the crunchiest guitars you've ever heard.
July Talk is the most unique vocals I’ve ever heard from a modern band.
I forgot to mention Tea Party, they’re great. Edges of Twilight is a fantastic album, and the rest of their stuff is really good too.
I’ll check out Metric. I’m sure I know the odd song from them but I can’t think of any. Thanks for the suggestion.
Live music in the local pub is great.
Like punk, alternative, indie, or post hardcore?
Arkells Billy Talent July Talk Arcade Fire Cancer Bats Alexisonfire Death From Above 1979 Broken Social Scene Three Days Grace
All Canadian bands, all great.
Canada's OG punk scene, from The Scenics through DOA and the only recently disbanded NoMeansNo, is often underrated in its importance.
The Filthy Radicals are an excellent ska punk/skacore band from Toronto! Canadian ska gets very overlooked.

I have been a musician since the 60s. I have music at home.
