If you don't, no need to reply telling me you don't. I live in the woods with some critters. I live pretty far from neighbors/police so having a gun gives me peace of mind. I also hunt and consider myself a gun hobbiest. I enjoy shooting targets, cleaning/organizing, reloading and earning food with guns.

I don't have nor do I need one but I'd still get one if I could. I simply think guns are cool - there's not much more to it.

Admittedly though I would worry a bit about having one in the house. There are few such tools that are very easy and quick to do something with that you'll deeply regret later.

i just want one because it seems like a fun thing to learn.

I want to hunt. Also kind of worried about being invaded by Americans. Rather die with a gun in my hand fighting back than go to some American POW camp where I spend the rest of my life upholstering benches for McDonald’s or some equally stupid American bullshit.

My husband has one, but I would like my own. I'd like something smaller-- not sure if they make "girl" guns, but I'd like that. I have tiny ass little hands and a weak grip, and the uhhh kick? Not sure of word but I don't want a gun that is going to fly outta my tiny ass weak hands when it fires...

I am a smidge paranoid when my husband goes out of town for work. Also with how things are proceeding in my country, I don't want to be in Nazi Germany 2.0: The Electric Boogaloo without a weapon. I am much more of a knife girl, but a gun is a good deterrent.

It is a good skill to have, shooting a hand gun. Imo everyone in the US should have it (if they want).

I don't have, but have been considering getting. I hear there's masked bands of kidnappers breaking into homes, so maybe it's time?

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Be careful out there friend.

Mostly, I enjoy target shooting as a hobby. Hunting is big in my area as both deer and feral hogs need to be culled.

I also feel there's a greater chance of widespread civil unrest than most people understand, and that folks in my area will likely have to defend themselves to some extent if it breaks out. For various reasons, the people who are most important to me aren't likely to be prepared for that, so I figure I should be ready to some extent.

I have guns for the same reason I have fishing rods and a bow. I enjoy it, and there's some satisfaction in being able to hunt or fish for a meal yourself. I didn't grow up getting to shoot much aside from a few rare afternoons out with a .22 when dad had time. While I fished a lot, didn't really get into shooting or hunting until after college. I started small game hunting with friends who would go out. While I had a lot of catching up to do, since I hadn't grown up hunting like they did, I eventually figured out how to clean game without making too much of a disaster of it. I enjoyed the independence of it, knowing more about the whole process and being able to do more for myself. Taught myself to tie flies, eventually started reloading my own ammo, then got further down the rabbit hole to casting bullets. For my leverguns with oversized bores (30-30 and 45-70), rolling my own ammo has been the best way for me to get decent accuracy. I have firearms because they're useful tools, and it's just darned fun to know that I cast the bullet that was loaded over the powder I measured, in the brass casing I trimmed and resized, and it hit the target waaay out there down range right where I wanted it to go.

Pure fun. And also just in case humanity will finally f**k up so hard that we will end up in the apocalypse.

I grew up in a family of overly-armed suburban conservatives, so inheriting a significant number of guns was always a given. A few pieces have sentimental value tied to the relatives who originally owned them. I don't use any of them, though. Hunting never interested me. Target shooting is fun once in a while, particularly trap and skeet, but I have too many other priorities vying for my time and money. If I were to get back into target shooting I would switch to archery.

Whilst I do enjoy the military history of guns and have been to a shooting range in the USA before I don't want any in my home. Ifi had them before I might not have been around due to the relative easy way out.

Also they are very hard to get where I live. I like that a lot. I think that there a majority of stupid people that I think would be terrible gun owners around me. I think in general my life would be worse is a majority of people owned guns.

I am pro gun control, but if I was in the USA, I'd have a gun. No sense being caught without one when the bad guy appears with one.

...Hobbiest makes you sound like you're the most hobby of them all! THE HOBBIEST! Oh yeah, I love guns, it's a hobby of mine... You might even say it's the hobbiest of all. I'm the gun hobbiest.

It's like having two dicks and it's much larger than the one that I was born with.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

What do you have other than the .22?

:-D!!

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I have no need for a gun. I live in a civilized country.

Frequently drive multiple hours through BFE in some very meth infested country. Go camping in national forest lands every other week during the summer where cougars abound. And in the case of my parents, ranch pest control and something to make use of the landowner permit deer tag they get once in a while.

I don't carry in town vast majority of the time, for obvious reasons, but I've got plenty of reasons to have a couple firearms. They are useful tools like any other. Also high precision target shooting is fun af.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

I grew up with shooting sports so it's normal for me, but I understand the reticence from people who aren't familiar. Guns are terrifying, and if you own one and stop treating it like a death stick at all times, you should consider getting rid of it.
