Seeing as the politics community only allows links to articles, which I think is stupid horseshit. Let's talk openly about changes we want to see here. I think the whole "this isn't the place for politics" is a part of the reason we're in this shit situation. We've let the greedy narcissists take over all discussion while we have no where to reasonably talk about policy.

I'll start with a couple:

End presidential pardon

Raise federal minimum wage to $15

Federal cannabis legalization (buy/sell/grow)

End daylight savings

Ranked voting should be everyone's number 1. Don't like the republicans because they're racist shitheads? Democrats because they are too friendly to racist shitheads? Change democrats to your #2 vote.

Yea I agree, that's why I'm really interested in STAR voting and created this https://masl.dev/star-voting

[–] Beebabe@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (2 children)

No more policy written by lobbyists.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Lobbying was at one time considered tacky and in some states was illegal.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Tough to legally define. We have a right to address our grievances with the government. Lobbying is the only way to be truly heard. Want to throw the ACLU out?

[–] newtraditionalists@kbin.melroy.org 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Voting should be compulsory and election day a national/federal holiday

[–] stickly@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

This + abolish corporate personhood mitigates half our problems. Hold C-suites criminally liable for company misconduct, remove lobbying, and ban stock trading for lawmakers and we're 80% fine.

Short of revolutionary change:

  • expand the house
  • expand the supreme court
  • abolish the senate
  • abolish the electoral college
  • use proportional representation for house elections
  • use rcv, approval, or some alternative for single seat elections
  • federally funded elections with short campaign windows
  • no political ads, use policy questionnaires and debates to get to know candidates instead
  • vastly limit executive power

I'm partial to the ³√(total population) for house seats personally.

The US needs something like 15-20 new constitutional amendments.

Any legislation can be rewritten too easily (or just plain ignored, apparently) the next time a half-witted authoritarian casts Mass Charm and enough people fail their WIS check.

One example: congressional war and emergency declarations are invalid without an end date no more than 1 year from the initial declaration. Congress can renew with 60% necessary to keep it alive. Make everyone go on the record repeatedly to keep shooting wars going. The President can declare an emergency alone, but it only lasts a week, then congress has to approve to keep it going.

Affordable public healthcare Term limits for all federal jobs, no lifetime jobs Supreme court expands to 13 members Repeal Citizens United Block Congress from owning & trading stocks Presidential candidates are required to release all their financials & medical or be disqualified Equal rights for all Citizens Tax the churches Tax the rich Tax corporations Everyone pays into Social Security, no income caps

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)
  • Term limits across all three branches, including changing the 22nd amendment to allowing 1 term as POTUS. Two terms is a completely arbitrary limit.

  • Ban congressional stock trading.

  • Grant voting rights to anyone paying taxes, including employed people under 18YO and non-citizens.

  • Massively increase the generational wealth tax. I'm talking somewhere in the 90%s for any inheritance of more than 10 figures that slides up asymptomatically to near-100% for anything more than that. It should be functionally impossible for anyone's kids to inherit more than a few million dollars, encourage the spending of that money while the earner is alive rather than just mindless generational hoarding

  • Get rid of the electoral college and mandate direct, rank-choice voting only for every level of election.

Other than that, rebuild the SEC and IRS to function as they were originally intended, tools to go collect funds and manage a healthy economy, not facilitate fraud and punish the working class.

I would love to see Justice and Accountability applying to EVERYONE regardless of political affiliation and for protections to be put in place to prevent anyone from being able to "make things go away" just because they happen to be in power at the time or because you're beholden as a judge to the man/woman who put you in power/appointed you.

Truth, Justice, and Accountability for all, applied the same regardless of your affiliation party or level of affluency.

I would love to extend that also to be able to retroactively punish people that abuse this - for example holding trump accountable for the insurrection/coup he attempted and for quashing all of the investigations into him. Blatant abuse of power and a spit in the face of all the things I previously mentioned. Prison for anyone that helped enable this.

I would also be saying the same thing if it happened on the other side of the aisle. This is a right vs wrong thing, the way it should be.

Also get rid of presidential norms and codify protections to ensure that shit doesn't happen again.

Edit - Also first past the post voting system needs to go and abolish the electoral college. Expand the house of representatives to actually align with the correct numbers to represent the constituents accordingly - it's waaaaaay off today and the balance of power is incredibly skewed.

Ranked choice voting. I’d also like to see Dems start pushing universal healthcare.

I also agree with the suggestion to expand the Supreme Court. One justice for each circuit.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Ranked choice gets us everything else listed in this thread. And yes, 13 Justices. That gets us a long way towards these other goals.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah I had a problem with that on a post. Some news rules would not allow for it but then the way politics was setup was a problem. I think the whole thing was kinda tangental to but im not going to violate rules willy nilly. That being said our democracy has been totally degraded so for me its like passing laws to nullify citizens united, revoking the patriot act and associated anti rights and privacy laws. Every law limiti rights needs to be revoked. Many like due process and search and siezure pretty much become useless if they are not applied in all cases. also all laws increasing presidential power. we also need to get rid of first past the post and the electoral college. I mean this is just a minimun so that we can correct everything else in a more properly working democractic society.

End presidential pardon

Chelsea Manning and Ross Ulbricht would still be in prison if not for that. Are you sure that is something you want?

[–] radix@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I'm on the fence about ending pardons altogether because of political prosecutions.

But the power needs limits. Make a pardon require individual names and criminal codes, no blanket pardons. Maybe even wait until after a conviction. Give congress the power to reverse a pardon within a year. And definitely no pardons for people within a president's own administration (including himself, obviously).

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yes, I don't care about partisanship regarding it. Even though there were a few that may have deserved it, it's still not worth the ability to abuse it which we're seeing now.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

register AIPAC as a foreign agent and then make it illegal for foriegn agents to lobby the US government.

That's the first link, other than some comments, that's ever directed me properly. Firefox on PC.

No more USA. Decommission the nukes while at it. The world will flourish.

[–] Mellow12@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)
  • A flat tax. No loop holes. Billionaires and corps pay their share.
  • Outlaw lobbying as corruption and bribery.
  • Members of congress and senate get paid the mean wage of all us citizens. If we do well, they do well. If they fail us, they don’t do well. Only way to get a pay raise is to do their job. Work for us. Not corporations.
[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

A flat tax doesn't achieve that.
