Gender reveal parties are fucking stupid anyway. What's next, eye color reveal party?

[–] gerald_eliasweb@reddthat.com 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

if capitalism gets its way...

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You mean because capitalism leads to fascism, where humans' eyecolor suddenly is an indicator of their worth? Correct!

[–] gerald_eliasweb@reddthat.com 7 points 4 days ago

.... no I meant so they can sell "Its a blue!" cards ....

[–] Mk23simp@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 4 days ago

Party where I tell all of my kid's friends about their ADHD diagnosis.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago

I worry when families from economically depressed areas do this bullshit. Like, what's the return on cosplaying white trash at great expense?

I have a lot of respect for languages that treat children as gender neutral.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 21 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I would not mind if we collectively decided to just use gender neutral terms when referring to kids till they are old enough to express a preference.

It would actually even be a benefit for “saving the kids” the less personal details strangers can know the better.

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 4 days ago

I'm even fine with only using gender neutral terms period. At least as the default

How about an agender-by-default society

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

I would. My boys are my boys and a collective decreeing I should wait until they decide they're boys is fucking mental, and illustrates the kind of warped thinking that goes a long way to explaining how 'the left' has handed power to that psycho in the White House on a plate.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

What in the actual fuck did I use read

[–] pelican476@discuss.online -2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hey everybody, this guy is cryptofacist. People who blame the right wing rise to power on "the Left" are usually cryptofascists, pretending to be Liberals in order to scold Leftists for trying to stand up for themselves while they're getting the shit kicked out of them.

In 2014-2016 right wing algorithms and niche right wing media creators pushed obscure, unpopular content within the "commentary" space (sometimes content created by literal insane internet randos) and presented it as mainstream Leftist thought in order to frame Leftists as mental, but even if they hadn't done that, Rightists would have taken power anyway. Right wing groups in America have a shit ton of money, power, and influence that Leftist groups do not have. Leftists don't even have a political party in the US, as far as I know.

Interesting, yet wildly off the mark take. I'm Scottish and have been a socialist my whole life, but I've mostly zero interest in tedious labeling. People like you with their skewed outrage and impossibly narrow definitions of how we should live are as complicit as the MAGA nut jobs in the decline of political conversation.

[–] pelican476@discuss.online 1 points 2 days ago

what the fuck are you talking about bro

[–] pelican476@discuss.online -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There is no way to prove that you are either Scottish or a socialist, this is yet another cryptofacist tactic: "Hey fellow leftists, don't bother saying or doing anything to defend yourself because it will make people vote for Trump. You hear that, all five of you? All five of you shut up."

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

You're unhinged.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz -2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I am mostly speaking about when referring to your kids while speaking to other adults.

Case on point, you just told the public internet you are the parent of multiple kids of the male sex. Why should anyone here need that personal information?

Kids also discover genders pretty early in life. They will have an initial preference.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Hardly. And why not? Why do you seek to repress what I chose to mention online? Like it or otherwise, the vast majority majority of folk don't have to go far to 'discover' their gender.

I have no interest in the relentless naval gazing regarding gender that disproportionately dominates online conversations, likely perpetuated by bad actors trying to push a niche issue into the mainstream to further splinter the left, but to my mind pushing a collective that removes gender from people until they decide at some arbitrary age what they want to be is not the change most people want.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You’re not being pushed towards anything by me. Normalising safe practices is not the same as making it required law

I am merely pointing out that in most contexts people don’t require that information and the less information about your kids is out there the safer they are.

I know that gender has been made political, but it shouldn’t be. Frankly its dumb that people care so much for something that is rarely relevant outside the bedroom.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Fair enough, perhaps I overreacted. I'm not particularly concerned that mentioning the gender or number of sprogs I have as part of a broader conversation poses a risk as such, but I take your point.

[–] pelican476@discuss.online -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You're not a cryptofacist, you're a socialist. A socialist who spends his time arguing online about concept of transgender people. Seems legit.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I do no such thing. I have nothing against trans people whatsoever. Where are you getting that from?

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago

Things that are weird:

  1. Gender reveal parties
  2. People who are needlesssly hostile about other people having gender reveal parties

If you want to have a party every time a gender / hair color / favorite tv show is speculated or changed or whatever, go have some fun with your friends. Im not the fun police.

[–] XM34@feddit.org 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Gender reveal parties are weird. But what's even weirder is people on the internet going mental because parents inform their loved ones of the child's gender with 97% accuracy.

[–] oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I've said this for years.

"Sex Reveal" has an entirely different connotation.

But just let kids tell you.

Give em a few years on their own to be exposed to how gender is expressed, then let them decide who they are.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Let's be real, most people would even take that to be one of two things: "biological sex" or genitals.

"Biological sex" is absolutely not what people think. It is not simply defined by genitals or chromosomes. It is not binary.

So let's simplify it and make it scientific and accurate, and just call it what it is, a genital reveal of your fetus. Could even be EXTRA violating and show pictures off to all the partygoers celebrating your fucking weird party about your fetus genitals.

Why not be a better person and just celebrate that you're birthing soon? Have a celebration closing out the last few months of privacy and peace before you have to start caring for a baby 24/7. Say goodbye to the previous phase of your life and ring in the new one. Like a bachelor/ette party before a wedding, but a no-children party before your first kid. It would be staying up all night and watching the sun rise the next day, then taking naps together in quiet, followed by whatever it is you can't do once you have a baby. Travel or have sex or something. This would also be inclusive for people adopting, where, a few days before you... Uh.... Take possession(?) of the kid, you throw one of these parties and socialize with your friends and say goodbye.

[–] oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

I mean, based on my observations, I think the only people organizing these at all are straight white cisheteronormative types (and further, almost always women).

Maybe that's just how I've seen it, but I've never witnessed them, I usually only hear about them at all if a video pops up of a compilation of bad reactions or mistakes (as in wrong color reveal, accidental early reveal) pops up. Maybe that's just me but I haven't personally seen much of any other group doing them in the first place. Occasionally there are others, but almost always done by them.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Or not done at all because they're silly.
