The EU has already noticed. Manufacturers have to provide software updates for five years, for all new devices since June.

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 61 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i thought it was more about making the older models shittier with updates. like apple limiting battery capacity, samsung slowing down and removing features, etc. i had s22u and it had tons of customization, you could put a calendar or a gif in the AOD but suddenly they removed it all, you could only change the color of the clock.

Is it possible / practical to go to a previous version of Always On Display?

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 2 points 21 hours ago

since it's a part of the samsung ui and there's no way to roll back, no

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What does "new device" mean?

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's new devices coming onto the market. So if they existed before June but they are still being sold, the rules do not apply to them. But new models that are coming out now have to have software support.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Yeah that's what I thought. That's the language companies use in the U.S. anyway.

A device that isn't old? 🤷🏻

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 3 points 12 hours ago

My understanding of the message in the OP is that phone companies are making phones suck after 2 years using updates that make the phone slower, etc.

.... Y'know, like Apple did a few years back.

If anyone thinks this is just a common meme, there have been lawsuits over this.

Example: https://pirg.org/articles/samsung-apple-fined-for-software-updates-that-slowed-phones/

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Apple supports their phones for at least 5 years. iPhone XS from 2018 is still supported by the current version of iOS. As iOS 26 just came out, that means 8 years of software support.

Including deliberate and unnecessary performance decreasing updates
Edit: source

Rocking my iPhone 11 Pro Max with OG battery.

Reckon I can get through easy until the 18 or the Fold.

No idea what you’re talking about.

[–] Chronographs@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Ha same, I keep saying I’ll upgrade next generation and it’s always underwhelming. Especially now that they’ve been huffing their own farts about ai. My battery capacity is at 70% of what it originally had what’s yours at?

[–] Inaminate_Carbon_Rod@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

82% and it gets me through the day no issues!

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 4 points 12 hours ago

No idea what you’re talking about.

They’re referring to an old controversy that was a mixture of bad decisions and conspiracy. They’ve now linked an article to the outcome of it. I won’t cover the whole thing but Apple “let slip” and “admitted” to slowing down old phones. This obviously feeds into the planned obsolescence conspiracies but at the time it wasn’t exactly hidden, Apple (one of their higher ups though I can’t think of who) said they were doing it.

The real issue was that it wasn’t implemented without transparency. The point is the device underclocks to prevent unexpected shut downs which makes it slower as a trade off for stability. Devices still do this, but it’s now shown in the settings and warns that the battery needs replacing.

[–] liuther9@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Iphone 5 had this problem, also ipad mini 1

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

No, you see you aren’t using technology the right way.

You need to hate Apple and instead buy a product that isn’t as good to stick it to them, then you can complain about this stuff with everyone else.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 3 points 13 hours ago

With iOS 12.1, Apple has brought its controversial “performance management feature” (aka, throttling) to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X. This functionality dynamically throttles the phone’s processor as its battery degrades over time to stop the handset from randomly shutting down

Better source

Its literally a feature to improve the longevity of the device. And if you really hate it you can either replace the degraded battery (in which case it will automatically return to the factory clock speed) or disable the feature and experience device instability. Would you rather your phone randomly crash and shut off on you or would you prefer to keep 50Mhz of clock speed?

[–] GraveyardOrbit@lemmy.zip -1 points 13 hours ago

The link literally describes them slowing the phones down to maintain reasonable battery life. That’s a perfectly acceptable tradeoff

Unfortunately apple is a walled garden

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That’s whataboutism though. If we’re discussing the topic of the post, Apple actually has a great track record.

[–] gigachad@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

I know it's not the topic. I just wanted to say that it is useless for me despite it's update policy.

Microsoft for example can offer a great Microsoft Office experience that has all the AI agents I ever wanted - but as a Linux user that doesn't help.

Also Ford can make a car that is really great for saving fuel - much better than Peugeot - but I only ride bikes.

You can call it whatboutism, but for me it's just a shitty product I do not need.

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I want my garden to have walls

[–] Baylahoo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

You can keep your walls and apple can let other people take those walls down. It could easily be a win/win. If they did that, they would capture a lot of android market.

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I also have a lot of older relatives who I can let roam in the Apple Walled Garden and be 99.95% sure they can’t fuck anything up by installing a sus app.

I only have to train them on phishing.

[–] sonofearth@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah but they make their devices terribly slow. I had a 8 y/o Oneplus 5 with Lineage OS 22.2 which was running as fast as my iPhone 13 pro with iOS 26 — which wasn’t the case 3 years back when I bought the iPhone. Unfortunately the motherboard of OP5 is dead because of wear & tear due to everyday use and is not worth the repair cost. So yeah, even my Oneplus 5 got 8 years of software updates (although not officially) and may get some more if the LineageOS team would still maintain it.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Software updates are using carrots (?) to lure in mobile phones?

Edit: no wait, that's a finger, I think. I don't know what the software updates are holding.

[–] bryndos@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

I don't believe software updates are skillful enough to catch a rabbit like that.

I reckon poisoning the rabbits tried and trusted carrot patch is way more like it.

[–] capcool@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's what the software updates are holding behind their back. I'm talking about the thing in front, which looks like a lure for the phones

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 22 hours ago

We need a phone that runs Debian stable.

[–] Draegur@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

My note 9 lasted a good 8 years... But yeah. Now when apps update, "your device is no longer supported" Wow okay fuck you too thanks a lot guys -.-

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Grandma got her Cutco out, she ain't playing around.

[–] CelestialMittens@feddit.org -2 points 1 day ago

How long will it take until the idiot consumers will notice and instead buy devices that aren't at the mercy of the manufacturer?
