NBC News exit polls from Tuesday's elections showed voters are deeply worried about pocketbook issues and the direction of the country.

Ahead of Tuesday’s elections, Donald Trump assured Americans that prices are coming down, the economy is picking up and the nation is flourishing in ways that make it the world’s envy.

Voters don’t seem to be buying it.

Democrats swept key races, as exit polls depicted an electorate gripped by fears that the U.S. is careening in the wrong direction, far from Trump’s glowing portrait of a nation ascendant.

Im going to go out on a limb and say that if 42 million people are on SNAP, maybe the economy isn't so great...

[–] coyootje@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most of the people I talked to about it when I visited my in-laws in Michigan a week ago were saying that they thought people on SNAP were people that couldn't be bothered to work... So not everyone has gotten the message yet. Tbf their county is definitely a very red one but it still amazed me how sheltered they were from things. I somehow know more about US politics as a Dutchie then they do. They had no idea that most SNAP recipients are people working minimum wage jobs that can't get by otherwise due to minimum wage being so little.

Hell, they didn't even know what the no kings protest was about...

[–] killabeezio@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Most people don't understand that Walmart is a huge contributor of this and that most places, especially fast food places, will only allow their employees to work so many hours so they don't have to give benefits.

I have a friend who is all about Trump. I will continue to try and convince him that there are better people out there. Another friend posted a Tshirt he was going to get him for Christmas. It was a DT shirt, basically making fun of him. My maga friend replied with a commie mamdami shirt. I'm just like is that supposed to be an insult? Do you not want affordable housing and living wage? Do you want to keep working 2 jobs?

I think there are a lot of people out there like him that play into the media. They blame the poor and immigrants instead of the rich. They see far left or a person with any other view as their own as far left and a liberal fascist commie. They are pissed at the previous democratic administration (which I don't blame them), but if you ask me Biden is just a Republican anyway. Go back 30 or 50 years and he would be a Republican. They want the same things, but see the left "far" left as commies and the previous administrations did nothing to help their situation.

I say all this to say, that yes, people are poorly educated and are shooting themselves in the foot because of what the media has told them to believe. This includes the propaganda found on Facebook, tik too, need sites, and other social media outlets. It's a frustrating time right now

It's also interesting when they say "I don't watch the news or keep up with politics, it all doesn't matter anyway" only to then complain when it does start to matter for them. I haven't heard them about the whole healthcare price increases shenanigans yet but I'm sure it'll hit them sometime soon. I agree that the news can be depressing at times but overall it's better to be occassionally depressed on up-to-date on things then to be ignorant. I saw a video that perfectly illustrated this the other day, this one about Bernie Sanders visiting Virginia. So many people there were saying "Now that I'm actually listening to him he's a really nice and sensible guy". Drives me insane.

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

but if you ask me Biden is just a Republican anyway.

This shit has to fucking stop.

Go back 30 or 50 years and he would be a Republican.

Oh, so he's a Republican from 5 decades ago? I thought he was a Republican right now.

Years ago I read Hunter Thompson's book, "Hell's Angels." I was a teenager who wanted to read about biker gangs, but there was one passage that stuck with me.

Back when the book was written [circa 1970] an Angel could get a job as a Union stevedore and earn enough in six months to drop out and live on the road for two years. If his girl friend got a part time waitress job she could support them both.

You used to be able to buy a house with a minimum wage job.

No one's on SNAP, now. See? economy fixed!

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

That's 42 million (roughly 10% of the population) on it right now. The percentage of Americans who will use it at some point in their life is closer to 50%.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's just a simple matter of concepts.

HIS economy is not the same as the economy of his voters.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Why is everyone so upset? I just got so much more money..."

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 0 points 1 week ago

This but unironically. Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

It doesn't match what anyone is seeing. That's the definition of gaslighting.

If the average American voter's days were filled with lavish dinner parties, golfing trips and vacations where famous people gave them golden trinkets, then I could imagine they would think their country is on a good path.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I went to McDonald's for the first time in several months the other day. I was craving pickles. I got a spicy McChicken with extra pickles and a mcdouble with extra pickles. It was almost $10. They forgot the pickles.

[–] worhui@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You got 2 sandwiches for $10 or just one?

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Two for $10.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But the billionaires have been making record profits!

I wonder how much longer it will take to the masses to finally understand that all that money the billionaires made was stolen from them in the form of underpaid wages, overpriced products, tax credits, subventions, and externalities.

[–] psivchaz@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

If I could make one wish to fix things, it would be to eradicate all externalities. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware this would absolutely suck for a while. Without some kind of matching increase in wages or subsidies, it would ruin a lot of people that I don't think deserve it. But when you have to pay for the cost of recapturing the CO2 you produce, when you have to pay for the actual cost of producing the plastic you throw away, we would very quickly get better alternatives. Biodegradable packaging would become more common. Alternatives to gas would explode. Interest in walkable areas and public transit would grow. Industries that really need disposable plastics are also rich enough to afford proper disposal, like medicine and electronics. After enough time, we'd just live in a better, cleaner world with less waste and more care put into our distribution networks.

We only have all the bullshit because they've been pushing the bill along to the next generation and the next and the next, and we are seeing the bill come due.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Isn't there some kind of protocol for when the president is out of touch with reality?

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Some kind of summer Olympic sport...

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Javalin throwing?

[–] hume_lemmy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

But de-luge is a winter event!

Gold medal for: hold your breath for the longest under water?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago
[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

His "bright view of the economy" is entirely based upon what he's been able to personally pocket through his multitude of grifts. He doesn't GAF about anybody or anything else.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thank you. While fixing our system to reduce wealth inequality is a huge deal for our future, I’m much more concerned with dump and cronies fleecing our system through grift, flouting the law, monetizing government function

Good luck with that. The military alone accounts for a rather large chunk of our spend, and I can all but guarantee there's a metric ton of waste there.

[–] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

That "Golden Age" line was for him and his billionaire friends openly robbing America in board daylight. It doesn't help even when the media pushes back at home in the most baby soft tone, he is still delusional believing his own narratives.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

That's the same problem Biden and the majority of politicians have. The "magnificent 7" are driving the markets up, while the rest are not doing so well. The economy is being fueled by AI hype right now.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Better give my billionaire buddies more money.

-Republicans, every time

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 6 points 1 week ago

Literally everything is more expensive. I understand that if you’ve never had to worry about money that’s not a problem, but for the other 99% of us it’s a daily issue.

We do not share his delusion.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would recommend going to your local community forum and read what your dumbass MAGA neighbors are talking about. They're all buying it despite all of the proof right in front of their faces at the local grocery store and gas station.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Who are you gonna believe, Dear Leader or your own lying eyes?

That's a lot of words to say, "Trump is a delusional liar."

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Over the weekend, Trump appeared at a “Great Gatsby”-themed party at his Mar-a-Lago resort, an event that produced a viral video of a partially dressed woman dancing in an oversized martini glass. Guests mingled at the oceanside estate — some in Roaring ‘20s attire — at a time when many furloughed federal employees are working without pay.

A senior White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, dismissed criticism of the party.

“It’s a Halloween party,” the official said. “We aren’t supposed to celebrate Halloween?”

Jesus christ, this impending revolution is writing itself hahaha

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

“It’s a Halloween party,” the official said. “We aren’t supposed to celebrate Halloween?”

Kind of avoiding the main point of the criticism there.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

That's not a view, it's a lie.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

its not his view its his lies like all the rest of them. its not about growing the pie its about having he most lopsided distribution in his favor. Preferably with all for him.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Just a year ago, we had an economy that was the envy of the world. Gee, what changed?

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Ofcourse not, Trump has different goals than the average voter.

[–] lukaro@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

My retirement accounts are doing great, if only I can survive long enough to retire. If not at least my kids will get a downpayment for a small house.
