This is nothing new or fake. There is no need to use the word "claim" like you think he is lying. I personally have a friend who spent like $50,000 or $100,000 to clone one of her dogs... twice.

I guarantee he has more money than she does (though she is ridiculously wealthy), so I have no doubts he did something that rich people have been doing for a decade.

EDIT: Yes, I know that is ESPN's headline, not OPs.

Did not know that. How far are we from cloning humans? xD

Hands down is already happened (Speculation here). Asking forgiveness has always been easier than permission. Look at the Chinese girls genetically altered to supposedly give them an hiv resistance. They got in trouble sure but they did it before a law was passed saying they couldn't. No law technically exists to stop human cloning. Just precedence that we all too well know means nothing anymore.

I really don’t want to peddle conspiracy, but if we’re talking speculation… I’ve heard speculation that human clones could be used for organ harvesting to extend the life of someone. Specifically, this theory was floating around when someone overheard Putin and Xi talking about living to 150 years old (or something to that effect).

Edit: here’s an article about the 150yo comment: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cr70rvrd41ko

I could totally see that.

Ever see the movie The Island? One of ScarJos first star roles i think. Along side Ewan McGreat Smile. Hello there.

Probably how Dick Cheney lived so long.

[–] Shawdow194@fedia.io 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We could probably do it now ethics aside

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yep, it's the "probably" that creates the ethics conundrum. We won't know how to improve the process without testing the process, and we cannot ethically create "test" humans like that scene in Alien Resurrection where all the failed Sigourney clones are sitting in jars, suffering and begging for death.

I remember all the headlines about cloning "Dolly the sheep" years ago, then that was it. Discussion of the tech in the mainstream stopped. So I always assumed that at that point there were sketchy human trials ongoing and its just not advertised.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Dolly was in the 90s... So much has happened in that field since then.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Human cloning, afaik, has been made illegal in parts of the US since the 90s (up to states; no federal laws) and is also illegal in a lot of other major countries around the world. It's entirely possible to clone a human embryo and let it grow; there isn't any kind of "accelerated growth" sci fi shit. And the ethics of cloning a human are... Questionable.

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All this tells me that there's now a cloning service that caters to the bourgeoisie...

Likely created right after the mid 90s. Possably much earlier.

Piff the Magic Dragon also had his dog Mr. Piffles cloned before he passed. From what I understand, he tried finding another dog but they never really fit in his act the same way so as Mr. Piffles started to get older, he cloned him and now has Mr. Piffles 2.0.

It's not cheap but I don't think Tom Brady cares about how much it costs.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Cloning can be cruel. The dogs still need a mother to carry them to term. These “moms” are treated as broodmares in a lab. Often the puppies are miscarried or deformed, requiring multiple tries.

And much like human twins or triplets, the animal can look exactly the same but have a completely different personality.

Cloning as a rule is kinda fucky, if memory serves right there was an Ibex species that was cloned out of extinction awhile back and most of the subjects were stillborn, except for one that basically died immediately after. But that was also using a sheep surrogate so maybe the species barrier introduced complications.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh sure when Tom Brady says his dog is a clone it's newsworthy, but when I say that the Prime Minister is a clone created by reptilian lizard people and that he looks in my window at night when I'm sleeping I "need to be medicated" and "I'm a danger to myself and others" RIIIIIIGGGGHHHHHTTTY

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What if I'm a lizard person clone and don't realize it yet? Would I even know if they just uploaded all my mammalian memories to my reptilian brain?

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

That's the crazy part. You wouldn't. You would have a cloaca though since the lizard people find separate genital and buttholes unconscionable, even in a human clone.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 3 points 2 days ago

Well he probably suffered some degree of head trauma during his career.

[–] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So? I claim that his claim is a claim indeed. You can claim too -- try it. Claiming is fun!

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I tried claiming some land and got arrested. It was not fun.

[–] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 1 points 3 days ago

Arrest wasn't fun, but claiming, I'm sure, was!
