So Obama can run against him then?

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 132 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Of course not, the two cases are totally different. They're so different, it's like black and white....

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 99 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 39 points 3 days ago

This is... The most accurate

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

They're so different that if he tries he will be shot, either through official order or some frothing at the mouth maniac.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 34 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Well, trump wouldn't be elected into position - that is explicitly prohibited. So no running for him or Obama.

The "loophole" is that he's trying to line up a coordinated effort to elect other GOP members. After elected they'll nominate trump into the line of succession as Secretary of State or another unelected position. Once the pawns are in place, the line of succession simply has to step down until it falls to him. Third term without breaking the "elected twice to office" condition.

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

IMO this is just to test the base and get them used to him stay in the office until he dies then someone from his family takes over or maybe musk himself.

The goal is a dictatorship and if there will be an election it will be a sham one line putin has.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I agree it would be a temporary measure. Realistically Republicans only need ~6 more governors on board before they can start talking constitutional amendments, and do away with these pesky restrictions all together.

This "loophole" wouldn't work. There are plenty of people in the line of succession that are ineligible to be President either due to being too young or being foreign-born. First, if it gets to the point where one of them would even become President, we have much bigger problems to worry about. Second, those people that would be ineligible would simply be skipped over for the next person in line who's actually eligible.

Sure, they could use the same backwards logic and hand-waving of Constitutional amendments that they've been using all along, but at that point they might as well just make an exception for the 22nd amendment and call it a day. If they're just planning to hand-wave away the rules anyway, why go through all those extra steps when just saying that the 22nd amendment is unenforceable would be quicker, easier, and accomplish the same thing?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I realize I'm playing advocate for a devil that needs no help, and I hope you're right. Simply saying there are arguments taking place that seperate the requirements of "being elected" as defined in the 22nd vs "being eligible" as defined by article 2.

As it's been explained to me, this interpretation would of course be challenged, and ultimately determined by our wonderful supreme court.

[–] bollybing@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 3 days ago

I've seen this loophole and it ends up with Jack Bauer being president.

[–] teamevil@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's a stupid loophole and hard to coordinate. The simple solution is for trump so send jd Vance, or whoever Trump figures can win and gets added on as VP, then he'd spend forever saying how the people wanted him back so badly. The President will step down and Trump again

[–] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

He can't run as VP because he is ineligible to be President. VP is the only position in the line of succession that can't be skipped. Anyone chosen as VP must also be eligible to be President.

The easiest way for them to do it is to go the "Casino" route. Put in some sock puppet as President and have Trump be the "senior advisor" that's calling the shots behind the scenes. Kinda like they're doing now with Musk.

No, the bill presented by GOP congress excludes any president that served two consecutive terms.

So currently, the only person on the planet that can serve a third term is trump.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 70 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I predict that there will be no consequences.

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

At this point we are the only consequence he can get. Congress refuses to act, courts do, but he started to ignore them, institutions are gutted.

This unfortunately won't end without us going on the streets.

Just this huh not the…. points at dozens of examples of what dictators do

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago

Yeah, no shit. That what progressives told you this fat fucking fascist would do.

[–] Kurious84@lemmings.world 25 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Why three terms? If hes doing such a good job when do we need elections anymore? We need trump till death and then then name his successor. It wont be JD. Itll likely be someone from his family. Ivanka fits the bill. He needs to get JD out and let ivanka in.

[–] molten@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

Careful, the scrapers might give the wrong message and this comment could end up in a 3 IQ news story about how alternative social media is warming to trump.

Not really. But they are that fucking stupid.

[–] JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's easy. If there's too much pushback, he's "just joking." Then he'll do it anyway. He "doesn't want to," but he "has to for national security." Then he'll talk about how "foreign governments don't want me to be president because I'm too good, America has never been greater, China wants me out. They've put viruses in the those vote counting things. You can't trust an election. The whole system needs to be fixed. It's war. It's too dangerous to have an election in war time. Our enemies are paying people to vote illegally. They look like us now. They're smart. They're really evil, but they're smart these Chinese. They look like us and sound like us. They have Canadians coming down here and stuffing ballots and they look like us. Those Canadians really sneaky, they look like us. It's true. They look like us. And their country is so terrible, it's sad, Canada, they have no money. They totally relied on us and I shut it all down. They were stealing from us with their tariffs. Do you remember that? They were stealing from us, and I shut them down, and now they're broke. It's so sad. So sad. But now they take money from China and stuff our ballots. And China gets in there with their computers and their viruses, they're really smart those Chinese. Ching chong ping pong and they're inside the computer. I don't know how they do it but they do it. It's true, they just go right inside our counting things, because our guys are so dumb. They really are. It's all immigrants in our universities and they can't keep up with these Chinese. But they wouldn't listen to me. I kept saying, 'we have to stop with all these immigrant students.' But did they stop? No, because they didn't believe me. They didn't believe me! And now we have all these immigrant students, and they're so dumb. It's sad how dumb they are. And our guys can't keep up because there's so many of them. They send them over in waves. It's like an invasion. Wave after wave of these immigrants, they say they're students, but it's an invasion. That's what it is, an invasion. Because we're at war, and we can't have an election when we're at war because it's not safe. So I'll stay president, because I'm the best. It'll be great. I'm great. I really am. Look how I shut down Canada. They'll be begging us to take them over any day now. They're already saying it, Canadians. They hate their government. So weak. Their Governor doesn't know what he's doing. He's so bad. So we'll rescue the Canadians. That's what I'll do, I'll rescue the Canadians. We'll get them one way or another. Because they're attacking us. They're sneaky you know. Those Canadians. They look like us and they're stuffing our ballots. They do it all the time. So we can't have an election. I want to have an election. I really do. I want to. But we can't. We just can't. We're at war. We can't do it."

Sorry 'boot that, eh.

I would if I could.

I can't, so I'm passing the friendly advice on. Been writing and working in communications for years, not trying to be an ass, but literally if you want your points better understood, you have to give the reader "pauses" in their mental dialogue.

Someone made fun of me several decades ago for it, I was butthurt, but I got better. I pass it forward.

Then he should find out what the 2nd Amendment is for.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (3 children)

He almost did. But missed the lesson by a few inches

It was staged.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Nah, that was staged. Nothing about it was real except that they blew a MAGA Moron's head off. Not really a big loss, it's not like he was using it to hold a operational brain.

Everything he does is what dictators do. Somebody explain to me why America has collectively allowed him to run the country

[–] Montreal_Metro@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago

Spoiler: he won’t live to run a third term.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

He’s doing it one way or another. Americans better face that.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago

Walmart is way too entrenched to switch. They own the supply chain from the soil to the store. They write half the ag bills.

Why not third term? Will US citizen storm the capitol or even do something to stop it in the next months ? I guess yes, don't know when. Will Trump pass laws to be president for the rest of his life? Most likely. Do the rest of the world have to worry? Yes but its not in their hands!

It's in your hands to change the feature, speak with your friends and family, change this.
ps: and we are in the first year of presidency, imagine the rest!
