Georgia Republican lawmaker also claims she didn’t know Rothschild family, of her ‘space laser’ theory, was Jewish

Republican US House member Marjorie Taylor Greene has said she believes in demons, surmising that they might be aliens who fell from heaven, and claims to have been unaware that key figures in the antisemitic space lasers conspiracy she floated were Jewish.

She made those bizarre remarks as a guest on Friday on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher after winning some fans among Democrats who once loathed her – yet had come to appreciate how the far-right Georgia representative had recently broken with Republicans on various issues. Those include healthcare, Gaza, the federal government shutdown that began on 1 October and the handling of documents pertaining to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was friends with Donald Trump before the latter man won two presidencies.

Greene’s appearance on Maher’s show perhaps made evident the ideological distance between the congresswoman – who has conspicuously avoided directly criticizing Trump himself – and some of her newer, cross-aisle admirers.

I was going to comment basically the same:

"There it is, the timeline is starting to correct itself"

I wonder which future historical figure was murdered or allowed to live by time travellers in order to get us back on the evil timeline.

What a shock. The Jewish Space Laser person believes aliens are real and that they are actually demons.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I've heard that it's a common evangelical belief. They believe that humans are the only sentient species created by God, so anything else would have to be Satanic. Makes perfect sense if you're fucking delusional.

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You know I figured if we found extraterrestrial life it would result in a massive crisis of faith for every religion, don’t know why it never occurred to me that that is 100% what they’d think if we found extraterrestrial life.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 15 points 3 days ago

Well, not all religions. Mormons would probably see it as more proof that they're right. They believe that God made multiple planets with sentient species. Besides that, gets a little bit conflicting. Then there's the Heaven's Gates. The weird alien obsessed ones. Probably a couple more, but those are the only ones I can think of. Oh, and Buddhism. Maybe. I don't know much, but I don't think that aliens existing conflicts with any of its principles.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 13 points 3 days ago

Religions are very adaptable. At least the ones that survive long times. Simply need to reinterpret scripture to include the new information, even claim to predict it. I think there's a certain percentage or type of people who need some kind of religious structure to deal with life, it's a biological thing. Being skeptical and setting aside your own beliefs for analysis is not an easy thing to do.

Of course it could go the other way and aliens confirm that the religion is true, just maybe that our records of events is off a bit. Cue the joke about the aliens saying they absolutely know Jesus, he comes by every year because they give him cookies or chocolate, and then ask why he doesn't come to Earth regularly, what did we give him?

[–] Caffeinated_Sloth@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As a former evangelical fundamentalist, I can confirm. It’s a common belief. That’s what I believed once upon a time. Fifteen years ago I would have argued with you about it.

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Also former fundie... and yeah there was a popular teenage book series when I was growing up. I think it was called "the forbidden doors". And yeah basically a long series that basically fell into the same pattern over and over, and yeah in short, basically it's "no that house isn't haunted, it's a demon, we need to get right with god and cast it out"... "No that isn't an alien it's a demon, we need to get right with god and cast it out". etc...

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I never heard that about aliens (probably grew up in too podunk a place for anyone to bring it up) but 100% heard this about hauntings. Anything related to ghosts is demonic or satanic.

Along with any bad thing that happens. Alcoholism? Demon got him. Accidentally killed a kid? Demon. Purposely killed and ate a kid? Demon. Spilled breakfast cereal? Demon. Don't like the way someone looks? A demon is probably in them, you can see it behind their eyes. Cheat on your wife? Demon. Get caught getting split open by two dudes in a truck stop bathroom? Demon. "Wrestle with gay thoughts" to the point where you think homosexuality is a choice? Well, thoughts of sweaty men showering together were sent directly by Satan himself.

For a bunch of folks who say you should take personal responsibility they sure blame a lot of shit on demons.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 8 points 3 days ago

I've also seen diseases and ailments being described as the fault of demons. High blood pressure? Demon. Allergies? Demon. Cancer? Demon. It's just crazy to me.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

Stay tuned, crazy gal has fits of sanity once in a while.

[–] ExtremeDullard@sopuli.xyz 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's not quite what she said: she basically said she openly believes in batshit religious nonsense, and as such would have no trouble believing unknown phenomena are figures appearing in her batshit beliefs.

The keyword in all of this is batshit. How she won an election, I'll never know.

[–] CommissarVulpin@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Because a significant proportion of the country is also batshit.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Can't stop here. Batshit country!

[–] blave@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

There’s that crazy bitch we know and love. These past couple of weeks of her acting reasonably? I knew that wouldn’t last.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Thank goodness, I was beginning to think that reality itself was unraveling.

Now, are these space demons jewish and do they have lasers?

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

She kept saying things I agreed with. It was starting to get a little unsettling. Here’s the batshit crazy I’ve come to know and expect. And somehow this level of insanity is deemed worthy enough to make decisions for millions of people…

[–] shittydwarf@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

She's been watching Dandadan!

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But aliens and spirits are enemies in dandadan. Spirits are what keep aliens from invading.

Well that's what Okarun thinks, and there's a difference between the yokai in his theory and spirits, but at least some aliens are repulsed by spirit barriers so there's an implication that there's at least a possibility that aliens are just yokai from space

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's the stupid.

I hated actually hearing positive views from that bog troll. She's a horrid thing and we should always remember that.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 2 days ago

Exactly, thank you.

I wasn't willing to give her a free pass on turning against Trump and co, because she has made absolutely zero effort towards so much as acknowledging the transphobic spew she was barfing out on government time.

[–] 7112@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think I've read this story before...

Childhood's End

Great little book.

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

One of my favorite Clarke books. A quick read, too.

[–] afox@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well I'm pretty sure I have ghosts in my blood and should do cocaine about it.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Cocaine embiggens the blood and wrinklecates the brain for do bettering.

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

So she is converting to Scientology? Cause that basically the same thing. Evil space alien are in your body and you need to pay lots of money to the church to exorcise them from your soul and body.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Religion is a form of insanity, but I think she would have managed to be insane without religion.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Religion can definitely drive people insane but I'd say in our day and age is more likely the already insane are drawn to it.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I disagree, most people that are religious, are brought up with religion. Their ability for rational thought is compromised from childhood.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

but insanity you mean stupidity.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Nope, she is literally insane. And religion is based on delusions, so that's insanity too.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 5 points 3 days ago

It just goes to show that lawmakers can afford all the best drugs to compound their massive congenital defects.

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Actually she was just sharing the fan theory for Signs. /jk

[–] notsure@fedia.io 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

...just because she's spouts crazy doesn't mean she can't be a useful idiot, see Donald Trump... ...she must be steered...

[–] notsure@fedia.io 3 points 3 days ago

...and where are the Epstein files?..

[–] rylock@piefed.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End wasn't fiction after all?

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Even a broken clock is wrong 22 hours a day

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So, I suspect this was a psyop to get Congress behind funding a number of surveillance projects, but the typical grifters and some hack Republicans who can’t find anything else to raise their profile quickly latched on. As soon as Lunatic got involved I knew it would turn into Religious fodder. These people are too kooky. Shameless and cringe and kooky.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I never thought I'd be happy to see crazy back.

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 2 points 3 days ago

I wonder if there's any recordings of her calling into the Art Bell show... anyways, her appearing on Bill's show doesn't really have anything to do with any favorability, he's had that POS Bannon on there several times much to my dismay, and no shortage of other nutjobs, which is one thing I've respected the show for, welcoming everyone to argue their point, except sometimes some points don't really deserve national airtime.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

two demons talking about demons, got it

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I think we all believe that. 😉

[–] Aedis@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not surprised this is what the guardian puts up as an article and not all the strangely coherent things she said on Bill Maher's show.

I was flabbergasted as I was watching... Like please stop making sense MTG!! It made me feel like I messed up somewhere cause historically she sounds batshit insane.

We really should "slam" the guardian for this shitty reporting/headline.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Were you watching it live? Or is it on the internet somewhere?

[–] Aedis@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

On HBO/max whatever the streaming service is called now.
