House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will endorse Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor Friday, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

The nod is coming after months of pressure and just before early voting begins Saturday.

Jeffries will join Gov. Kathy Hochul and other senior New York Democrats who’ve announced their support for the democratic socialist after keeping him at arm’s length since his surprising Democratic primary victory in June. One of the people who spoke to POLITICO, who’s close to one of the two camps, said the announcement will come Friday afternoon in the form of a statement, rather than an event.

Democrats will always do the right thing, after having exhausted every other option.

Jefferies is a neoliberal, it's a square/rectangle thing, and he's still a Dem....

But that wing just lost control of the DNC, so it's an important distinction to make.

We can't afford to depress turnout in the next Dem primary, because that's the only shot a neoliberal has of winning. And if they go on to win the general, they name a DNC chair and we're right back where we started 30 years ago.

No matter what, we can't allow them to take control of the DNC again, because they don't care if maga wins as long as they stop progressives

Bloody hell, this is what your comment made me think:

Republicans are rectangles, most democrats are squares. Republicans have been changing the size and shape of their original somewhat square hole to be smaller and thinner so former republicans who don’t fit anymore just use the square hole instead of the rectangle hole. Sure, we’d like to vote for a semi circle, or even a circle. But we can only use the square hole. Because there are still a lot of pieces that use the rectangle hole. And if we use the circle hole, or the semi circle hole, or even the bridge hole, the skinny demented rectangles win. So we all have to use the square hole.

But square and non-skinny rectangles, while they like to win and beat the skinny rectangles, still want everyone to be a square. They will only support circles if there are no squares or rectangles left to support.

In case anyone hasn’t seen it, here is square hole: https://youtu.be/cUbIkNUFs-4

Now we just need the redemption video where we all go into our own separate holes….

We will absolutely go back to the way it was 30 years ago because time is a flat circle and humans are unoriginal.

Wooo summer of free love coming back baby

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

And, eventually, the Summer of Ska

And doing everything they can to undermine anything that helps the working class behind closed doors

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

He waited so long his endorsement is now irrelevant. I guess he was waiting for Elmo to tell him what to do.

He's only doing it now because it's clear Cuomo will lose. If the race had been tight at all, they would have withheld endorsing anyone until the race was over.

Oh, someone finally realized their job was on the line

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And all it took was one senator suggesting that Ocasio-Cortez should run for president.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 6 days ago

More like Cuomo finally bombing enough they had no choice but to back the one who would win

[–] frustrated@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What a cowardly bitch. Waited for the last possible moment once it was clear he had no other choice. God I hate Hakeem Jeffries.

[–] marietta_man@feddit.nl 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I suspect nothing is good enough for you, ever

[–] frustrated@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I'm surprisingly easy to please. You just need to semi-consistently represent the interests of your constituents. Easy peasy. Jeffries has been called to endorse Mamdani since July. He waited until the last few days before the election, instead of actively dissuading Cuomo from running by endorsing the clear primary winner. As a result, Mamdani spent the entire summer having to deal with attacks from someone in his own party rather than expounding on his (extremely popular) platform.

It is generally a bad sign for a party that wants to call itself 'Democrat' to reject the clear democratic will of the people in your own primary. Call me unreasonable for noticing.

LL: Democrats are genociding fascists! Why don’t they endorse Mamdani???

Local Dem Chapters: *endorse Mamdani early, are vocal supporters*

NY Dems: *top-out donations from Democrats*

Dem house leader: *endorses Mamdani*

LL: Dems suck!
