The entire world of home IoT devices shouldn't need an Internet connection. They should be able to work entirely based off of local network requests or other local connections (e.g. Zigbee or Thread).

I love my smart home stuff, but it's all locally controllable. My lights will still work with the Internet out. Now if my home server goes out not so much, but at least then it's my own fault.

Eight Sleep’s products rely on cloud connectivity to control temperature and track biometric data. When AWS went down, users lost access to the app that manages its water-cooled coils, leaving them stuck with whatever setting was last active.
Insane oversight to design the bed (or any product like this, really) such that it can't be adjusted without the internet.
My DIY floor thermostat has a 20 cent watchdog chip that requires a ping from the main MCU every 10 seconds or it will cut power to the heater.

But then they wouldn't be able to force customers to send them analytics to over-pattern-recognize other companies into buying from them!
Think of all the startups that need this crucial sleep data! Why, how else would they get a more complete picture of how the launch of their product is impacting the other influential members of the tech circles‽

As someone who remembers what mattresses used to cost before you could buy memory foam mattresses that shipped in a small box from China, $2000 doesn't seem that bad. My wife paid $1500 for some POS Serta mattress and box spring fron some perpetually "going out of business" mattress store when we first got together in the mid 2000s. Without checking an inflation calculator, I imagine that was the equivalent to $4k today for a lumpy mattress with springs that poked your back.
At least it didn't overheat and get stuck at a bad angle. You knew what you were getting into back then!
You remember when IOT had so much potential? Now i won't buy anything smart that shouldnt be. And I generally try to buy hardware with an open stack.
We don't have to live like this.
I for one was never a believer in IOT. Bait and switch, early depreciation, privacy, etc.
