The non-monarch told U.S. troops stationed in Japan Tuesday that he was prepared to send “more than the National Guard” to American cities to safeguard and enforce his immigration agenda—a threat that could apparently involve any branch of America’s armed forces.

Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to South Korea hours later, Trump clarified that he would do whatever is “necessary” to tackle crime, even if that meant ordering the U.S. military onto American soil.

“I would do that if it was necessary, if it was necessary I’d do that, but it hasn’t been necessary,” Trump said on the plane. “We’re doing a great job without that—is necessary. As you know, I’m allowed to do that.

“And I’d be allowed to do whatever I want, but we haven’t chosen to do that,” he continued. “And the courts wouldn’t get involved. Nobody would get involved. And I can send the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines. I can send anybody I wanted.”

The president is typically prohibited from leveraging the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement purposes under the Posse Comitatus Act, though one law stands as the major exception to that rule. Trump could use troops to handle domestic issues if he invoked the Insurrection Act, but doing so would require a state of emergency.

The legal loophole has been used by 17 presidents but has not been invoked since 1992, when President George H.W. Bush used it to subdue riots in Los Angeles after the local police force brutalized Rodney King.

Except, I think more and more people are starting to have at least some idea of exactly how low he will stoop.

Every day it seems like we're reminded that it definitely can happen here, because it seems to be in the process of happening. There is no bottom with this guy, but giving into the fear and intimidation is letting the terrorists win.

But also, if they don't, please understand that there would be actual consequences for them to not hold America at gunpoint and we should support them because they are just kids who want to go to college.

This is just another example of right wing projection isn't it. They said there was a secret cabal of pedophiles running the government, but it was them. Right wingers have been worried about the government and military over reach on home soil for years, it's there justification of owning so many guns. But actually it was what they wanted the whole time, just persecuting the other team.

bingo. and this won't be a one and done thing, he's talking about a third term for real this time. this is all part of the plan. People won't be eating in a matter of days, the administration is counting on riots, and marshal law will be very long lasting as will a "state of emergency" that will be sure to last for a third term and if something goes wrong health wise for trump another president will be "appointed".

The man declares a state of emergency when people make fun of him. He declared a state of emergency to enact tariffs and declared a state of emergency to unleash the national guard on cities. I am pretty sure he has claimed everything he has done was because of a national emergency. Since when has America ever been about 1 guy? I vote, I’ve been protesting, I agree on a general strike, I try talking to republicans, I volunteer in my community, I increasingly boycott big corps, I work a job caring for my community, I travel to help educate myself on the rest of the world.

Just because “getting off my ass” isn’t visible to you doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Folks who are not members of a privileged ruling class have no real say about what their leadership does with the military regardless of the illusion of choice they're given on election day. The idea that average, working class Americans are responsible for national guard troop deployments in US cities for stated political purposes can only come from a privileged person who has the kind of power and control to do anything to affect the situation. I know that's not me.

If anyone wants a suggestion for something they can personally do to help America's national situation, go to the food bank and move boxes around, and if you've got enough money to do it, go to the local megamart and buy all the clearance and donate it. Food stamps are gone starting Monday.

Yup, and it's going to have to happen too, so might as well get to it, eh. There is nothing gonna save you except yourselves, and it needs to get worse before anyone will get off their asses to make it better again. It's coming. There won't be another election at this point. There will be martial law before too long, there are already ICE and National Guard in cities for zero reason, so it's only a matter of time. Why would I help you who willingly won't help themselves?

I didn't suggest it because it is the ONLY viable option. The courts won't save you, politicians won't save you, the police will certainly not save you and the military has already been compromised and also, likely won't save you.

What are your options? Starve and die or rise up and fight together. You outnumber them significantly, and I doubt any institution outside of the highest office of politics has any appetite for mass murder of their fellow citizens. Unfortunately, it's going to get to that point before any tables get turned. Welcome to the new world order.
