God, so much this, and thinking you are crazy for thinking that while also knowing on surface level, a lot of other people feel the same way
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Emotions and rational thinking don't really see eye to eye. One is like: "OMG! We're all gonna die!" while the other is like "Take it easy. It's not a big deal."
In many cases, you think your emotional response is unique and applies to nobody besides yourself. In reality though, many people feel the same way, but they just don't talk about it.

I've never even looked, I use Boost.
It tingles my nervea
No.
Unless it's going to be full of assholes with shitty replies for me to block from, then it's a chore.
I haven't gotten to a point where I couldn't read all the messages I got yet
I didn't read anything but the title. When I see a lot in the inbox I mark all as read and never look back.
This is the way. Basically, the rule 1 of internet.
Always react based on the title, ignore any news articles or long explanations the post may have. Never click the news article, since we all know journalists are very good at conveying the core message in the title without implying anything even a little bit distorted. On top of that, the average Joes posting their random ideas are also professionals when it comes to crafting descriptive post titles.
I dunno about you, but I had that as a left over from reddit, damn they're unnecessarily harsh over there.
It takes time to heal from that kind of trauma. Stay strong!
At 324 and going, I don't think I care much. I just don't interact with many, and don't mark read without interacting. So they remain
That's an interesting strategy. Looks like we are using the inbox in very different ways.
Last week this happened!
I didn't remember writing the post, nothing offensive I was just asking about good boardgames to play drunk. It was bit surprising seeing the notifications.
i get dopamine.
Yep. Although for me it's not the fear of screwing up, but knowing that I'll be infuriated when I check them.
Usually it's politics in that case and you already know a bunch of people will dogpile onto you despite you being right. You'll get the same stupid liberal misconception multiple times from different people.
It's infuriating and something no platform can fix. A fix would require the overton window to move.
I treat political discussions the same way I deal with radiation—distance is key. If you can't have enough distance with the radiation source, you need limit exposure by having something suitably protective between you and the source. Needless to say, I don't read any political communities. While browsing c/news I tend to avoid the comment section if it looks like the headline is likely to ignite another flame war.
That sort of endless debating just siphons my will to live, so I think it's safer to steer clear instead.
