Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). 3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. 4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

CNN’s poll finds that more than half of political independents are either dissatisfied with or indifferent to both political parties – but different blocs of independents hold notably different attitudes.

And within the parties, people are more vehement in their dislike of the opposition than in their enthusiasm for their own party. The Democratic Party last saw positive ratings from a solid majority of the country in February 2009, while the Republican Party last saw a favorability rating of 55% or higher in February 2005.

It’s been 23 years since Americans gave both parties ratings that were broadly positive at the same time.

Almost half of Americans are still blissfully unaware of the utter and total shit they're in...

[–] crandlecan@mander.xyz 22 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

As is most of the Western world... 😒

I think throughout most of human history most people have tried really hard to believe "this is fine" regardless of what's going on and periods of time that we see as having massive unrest involved like 50% of the population openly saying "this sucks" and maybe 20-25% saying "this sucks and I'm willing to do something about it"

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

The worst part of that seems to be that usually that 20-25% is made up of the most extreme dullards who don't understand that people tried to say "this is fine" because those people knew the importance of stability. In the US, the people most likely to "do something about it" are tantamount to Trump's fucking brownshirts. The people ready to throw it all into the dustbin of history aren't necessarily the people with the best education or intents. They're just angry that the bread and circuses don't satisfy anymore.

people tried to say "this is fine" because those people knew the importance of stability.

I saw that dynamic too but I think part of how we got to this point is that we broke the trust of the public by insisting "this is fine" when they could tell it wasn't, and the insecure condescension we got from a lot of our leaders didn't help matters

I will say that there are some people way too eager to burn everything down right now and the crazier things get the more important it is that we all try to speak carefully, but OTOH we also absolutely need to throw some things into history's dustbin and the longer we wait to do so the worse this is gonna get

I agree these aren't the best of times, but I'm also not certain there will not be better days. The more people that decide this is it and give up, the more likely the best is behind us.

Thoughts and prayers 🙏

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 10 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I very honestly think the best days are yet to come. The idea of America when that happens might be radically different than today though.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I actually agree, I don't think I'll live to see those better days because I think we're still staring down another century or so of dumb shit, but I think our whole species is eventually going to hit a rock bottom, learn some very painful lessons, and come out better for it. Also, I think by that point the idea of nation states might be kind of antiquated.

Haven't we always been backwards looking though? "Y'know, in my day..."

I'm sure even at the start there were people going "Man, we were so much better under King George..."

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago

It's CNN we're dealing with here, so of course the headline is misleading. Most of the article and most of their polling questions are actually about views of the two major parties which are in general basically worse than they ever have been.

Jordy, you’re a frozen in time “progressive” white male genx who has had most of his life handed to him, despite your tough-love-bootstraps attitude. You’re not gonna see 10 years from now 💔 which has made you cold and bitter to the suffering of others. You just think today is another day and that everyone is just overreacting about all this fascism stuff.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 0 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

LOL - I haven't had jack handed to me. I worked for all of it. And no, I don't think people are over-reacting to fascism, they are reacting in ways that are completely ineffective.

[–] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe -1 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Your entire life is laid out on google. Everything is public information. I very much disagree that you’ve had it rough.

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 4 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

You don't know him, and rooting around a stranger's personal life is a really weird fucking thing to do.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Nah. Fascist enablers need to be outed for what they are.

[–] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe -1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

You don’t know that I don’t know him, and you don’t know why I have a problem with him. I assure you, this is not random.I could elaborate, but I don’t have any interest in your acceptance.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I never said I had it rough, I said I worked for everything I have, there's a difference. 😜 I've come a long way since going broke in 2002. LOL.

[–] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe -2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Right, you had it easy. Thus, “handed to you.” I didn’t say you never had to be employed. Glad we got that sorted.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

"Handed to me" implies some kind of nepotism, that I somehow didn't earn what I have done which is, frankly, a little bit offensive.

I don't know if you remember this, but back when Reddit pretended to care about such things, they made a filing with the FCC on Net Neutrality, why it was so important and so on.

They wanted submissions to include, I drew on my experience and wrote up my opinion, it was one of thirteen or so they included with their FCC filing.

Shame they pussied out AFTER the fact, but it was nice while it lasted.

So the US had jumped the shark?
