The letter about hating the sea was written just after or at the end of his five year voyage on the Beagle. So, understandable.

Being at sea for several years changes people.
Also, being in America and realizing the invasive little shits everyone generically refers to as "bees" are invasive species that precipitate the decline of native species changes people.

Turns out letters were like tweets back then lol
That's not totally untrue. Iirc the first cat memes were postcards people send each other at the beginning of the last century. I guess the difference is that postcards and letters only reach a single address, tweets can reach many people at once
In some ways, figures like Darwin and Attenborough are my heroes, so it's nice to see that these men are human and share similar distastes for fucked up shit as me.
Fuck clover and bees

Wasps too!
Wasps are my archetypal frenemy. I hate them, but I love them and what they do, but they can please do it far away from me, but they should also do it in my backyard, but not when I'm there, and I don't mind sharing food with them, but I can't stand having them near my food, and I don't want to hate them but whenever they're near I seize up and can barely breathe or move.
I don't like them half as much as they deserve.
I wonder what that was about - some sort of classification issue, or just having problems pinning them down?
