He should have respected the flag, like making it black and white except one of the strips is blue. Or by putting it on an article of clothing like underwear so the flag can literally go up your butt. You know, "respect".

Or putting it on the back of your truck, where it will get covered in road grime, but you won't care because you're a 'patriot'.

Also /s, of course.

Our maybe beating a police officer with the pole it's mounted to

My MAGA relative has an American flag bath towel. Nothing says "patriotism" like doing the butt-floss with Ol' Glory!

My favorite sticker is that "thin blue balls" flag but the blue stripe is peeling off to reveal the Nazi flag underneath. I wish I had the balls to put it on my car but I absolutely do not.

This is well-established law. A decision made by SCOTUS.

Texas v. Johnson

Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), is a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in which the Court held, 5–4, that burning the Flag of the United States was protected speech under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as doing so counts as symbolic speech and political speech.

So this is absolutely pathetic of the Trump administration. These charges have no chance of sticking. It's just authoritarian bullying.

You know what else was well established law? I’ll wait.

[–] mean_bean279@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago

Pretty much everything prior to this partisan Supreme Court. This new court just says “fuck it” and does what it wants.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That little document that makes all the rules?

[–] Aquaphobi@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Instructions unclear, the constitution is now a docker compose file

[–] Steve@startrek.website 1 points 1 week ago

Lots of things that used to be called crimes against humanity but are now just another tuesday?

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 68 points 1 week ago

“How dare you exercise a constitutionally protected, right!“

– Trump, right before he deports this person, their entire family, and anyone who ever knew them

Within the last day or so -

Burning the flag, renaming DOD to Dept. of War, trying again to deport Kilmar Abrego, signaling they’re going to ban the COVID-19 vaccine, and attempting to sue California to prevent their redistricting while allowing Texas’ to proceed.

Is this more of the gish-gallop that Bannon described that they’re pulling to overwhelm the news cycle so that a few of the bullshit things they’re pulling don’t get overturned, or are they specifically looking to push out some stories, like Trump’s obvious failing health, Epstein-related stories (inclusive of the latest on Gislaine), or possibly the redistricting one above.

Ugh. They’re up to more bullshit than usual, but the signal to noise ratio makes it hard to discern what.

You left out the online vigilante portal.

The what?

Edit: What the fuck?

[–] BiCow@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Executive order from Monday "The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force established in Executive Order 14252 of March 27, 2025 (Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful), shall establish an online portal for Americans with law enforcement or other relevant backgrounds and experience to apply to join Federal law enforcement entities to support the policy goals described in Executive Order 14333." Executive order

Or the Rockland NY and other election lawsuits...

Isn’t proper flag code to burn an American flag to retire it after it’s become tattered enough not to be a symbol of the US anymore?

[–] Laser@feddit.org 13 points 1 week ago

The whole thing is super dumb, as you said, burning the flag is the proper way to get rid of one no longer for for display (imagine the flag hanging out of a bin or something).

You know what's also against the flag code? Plastering it everywhere that's not a flag, like towels or whatever. But the flag code is only binding for government bodies if I'm not mistaken.

But yeah, the whole thing is just stupid.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Inciting a riot? I dont think Trump is on any leg to make that accusation

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Oh it doesn't matter. None of this matters. The rules, the courts, the white house. It's all bullshit.

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Didn't we already have a supreme court case about this? Oh, right, we did. The arrogance of an executive order imposing intent of speech is just one more line of idiocy in the annals of this period.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that happened around the same time that the supreme Court agreed that abortion was a human right as well.

It would be crazy if they were to later contradict themselves.

It would be even crazier if we didn't all arm ourselves, practice and prepare for the worst knowing damn well that we could easily outsmart people that are dumb enough to support fascism on a battlefield that is inevitably coming our way.

[–] DioramaOfShit@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

If I see someone burning a flag, is it okay to pee on it to put it out?

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

We should all be joining him.. They going arrest millions of us? We neee to treat this like the No Kings Day. This shit is beyond unconstitutional. I wonder if Trump is trying to get that overturned? Womder what his SCOTUS will do with this one?

So much for respecting the flag code

[–] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

any update on this? they let this guy go? If they do charge him with something, I'd love to see how that court case goes.

edit: well, i googled it. Apparently he was released after 4 hours and they charged him with "lighting a fire in a park".

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Well he sorta did do that so….

[–] Aimeeloulm@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

Maybe he prefers to warm up his flags before eating them, I'm sure Zoidberg would agree 👍
