(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Honestly the biggest takeaway for me is that apparently, they talk like this in private as well. In other words, they do seem to actually believe what they say. Or at least believe that they have to keep up appearances to each other.

Even more disturbing is that if we have evidence of one Signal chat that must mean they regularly use non-official communications channels to discuss things like this. That means no formal record retention, no safeguards against export control and protection of classified information, and no pathway for transparency. These communications are entirely FOIA proof such that the American people have no way to even attempt to obtain information through legal channels from government officials.

Isn't every top politician keeping part of their professional communication out of such requests at this point? Not just Hillary's #butteremails but I seem to remember instances where Ursula vdL did that, even Merkel texted certain things (definitely [non-sarcastically] just a coincidence that all of the people I named are women).

They called it the "Rutte doctrine" in the Netherlands, under previous prime minister (and current NATO chief) Mark Rutte, if you need a male example.

Up until I read this I thought they were just evil. But no, they are actually morons who really believe that the US protects Europe out of the goodness of its heart.

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They don't "protect Europe" they just protect their own economic interests, that happen to coincide with European ones

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Sort of a shame these goons don't seem to understand even that

Yeah. Seeing them post prayer and flag emojis feels just ... weird. They look like caricatures of themselves.

And why do they call Donald "the president"? To distance themselves? Out of respect? Because that's just how you're supposed to do it?

The irony being that Houthi were attacking predominantly US & UK ships due to their ongoing support of Israel. The US created this problem, and then moan when they have to clean it up. At this point, the US is the world stage equivalent of a petulant child spilling milk on their shirt and then throwing a tantrum.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Clean it up... As in commit war crimes and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and Houthi supporters?

[–] TheFriendlyDickhead@lemm.ee 15 points 2 days ago

It's sad the some of their biggest reasons to do it, was sothey could say they did something biden couldn't. The time we could trust them is sadly over

Hopefully Van der Leyen and the @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu will have a word to say about this.

P.S original article

[–] fylkenny@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Last time, when it came out that they're spying on us, it was just a stern "allies don't spy on each other"

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 5 points 2 days ago

I do hope that times have changed, but we'll see.

[–] myrmidex@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 days ago

They're spewing enough words. It's action which Europe needs.

[–] kwr112233@feddit.dk 6 points 2 days ago

As a European… where is this freeloading and how can I get me some?
