Deadnaming Twitter and the Gulf of Mexico is praxis

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 49 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For Twitter. Off the charts very cool.

[–] cron@feddit.org 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There is a new name for twitter?

[–] miss_demeanour@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also know as “Xitter” (pronounced “shitter”)

[–] tischbier@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

Or alternatively, “Zit-ter” if in polite company.

I don't care if Sears doesn't even exist anymore, it's the Sears Tower.

[–] Contentedness@lemmy.nz 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Bit off topic but I kind of respect IBM for sticking with their same logo since 1972!

[–] deus@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On this topic, I want to give a shout out to the Chicago Bulls for having the exact same logo since 1966. It's a great logo and I appreciate that they haven't changed it at all.

[–] dwindling7373@feddit.it 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a very obvious business reason why though.

[–] deus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is there? Most NBA teams change their logos every now and then.

[–] dwindling7373@feddit.it 1 points 1 week ago

It's Michael Jordan.

[–] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Lucky Strike cigarettes have had essentially the same packaging since 1942.

[–] YoFrodo@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

If inanimate objects, areas, websites, or concepts anthropomorphized and told us their preferred name then I'd respect it. People with feelings get to decide their own name, the rest do not

[–] Wilco@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

Yes, also apps ... because people still understand it when I say fuck Twitter.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I still say Burma (fuck the military dictatorship).

If it was from the zoo... it would have PROPERTY OF THE ZOO STAMPED ON IT

[–] Squorlple@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It was a tough seven years when people called him Prince instead of just saying Ƭ̵̬̊

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Did he ever even mentioned how you'd pronounce that symbol in speech? Also: I remember everyone calling him "the artist formerly known as Prince," in an attempt to try and respect his name change.

Sports teams?

I'm fond of the Washington football team

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apparently in the US they have some old teams used to have racist af names.

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Used to*

Still do

But used to too!

I'm fond of the Washington football team moniker, I feel they should've become the warthogs, could've even tied in military sponsorship the NFL loves so much with the a-10

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Idk. I’ve never followed US sports. (I prefer the type of football where you kick a ball with your foot, not wear transformers suits and bang into each other)

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You mean soccer? The term coined by the English before it replaced what we called football over here?

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I mean what most of the world except america and australia call football.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this thread is so cringe lmao

Hihi. I’m here for it

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Kind of funny to try to dunk on the US for using the "wrong" term and then dunk on yourself by calling the US "America"

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

It'll always be the Millennium Dome to me.

The Mexican Heinz

[–] Cantaloupe877@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Aint no way we can deadname twitter

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 week ago

I don't care what brand name they change it to, the stadium in San Jose will always be "The Shark Tank" to me.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There is definitely a grace period depending on how long you knew the old name, compared to the new one.

Bruce jenner was a name i knew for waaaay longer than Caitlyn. Mainly cause he won the Olympic gold.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i mean yes but why misgender her 🤨 she still won that olympic gold lol it’s not a different person

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world -5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd argue that it's weird to call a Bruce, "her". After she transitioned, thats a different story.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah take this as a heads up then. In the trans community, it is generally recommended to use a person’s current pronouns and name, even when referring to their past. This aligns with the principle that a trans person has always been their gender, even if they were perceived differently at the time.
