  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.

Would be crazy if Dems made this the central plank of their agenda, rather than Crime Wave hysterics and AI "Abundance"

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

The "abundance" bullshit seems to have failed, which I'm very grateful for. I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard Ezra Klein attempt to explain it and thought it was a load of shit. It's literally just deregulation. Fuck off with that shit.

Sounds like a good idea but this seems to be mostly focusing on problems of the future. Maybe preventing new ways to rob customers but not really doing anything for current practices.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 8 points 15 hours ago

There are already stores trying to pin prices on retail items according to what they think the customer will buy. This isn't widespread in use yet, but it's not the distant future. It's right now.

It's not really good news though, is it? The majority won't even bring it to a vote and it'll die in committee. Republicans (most, but not all) are a cancer in Congress and we need some serious white blood cells.

Depends on how you sell it maybe. Tell people they want to use personal data that include networth or income to dictate food prices and you might get Republican support

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

This isn't a good news community; it's a politics community.

Anyway, while I agree that Republicans are unlikely to advance it because it would help people and that's a bad thing according to Republican politics, your absolute doomerism is also unhelpful.

[–] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 0 points 11 hours ago

Who said this is doomerism? I'm calling for real change.

I don't know the specifics of her bill but if it it involves price fixing, history has shown that only leads to shortages.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They should also pass a bill to exempt imported food and food manufacturers from tariffs. It's one thing to say we need to incur higher prices to encourage American investment but leave the fucking food supply out of it.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

The US also needs to fix its corn subsidy problem. So many farmers grow exclusively corn because the subsidies just make it impossible not to, and most of that just gets turned into ethanol.

If the government were to cut off corn subsidies, or just start subsidizing better food options, a lot of the food scarcity and price problems faced by Americans could be solved.

But that would make gas more expensive, so obviously that takes priority...

[–] tburkhol@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

While only ~10% of corn is human food (including corn syrup), the rest is about evenly split between ethanol production and animal feed (~45% each). https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/crops/corn-and-other-feed-grains/feed-grains-sector-at-a-glance

I mean, ethanol for fuel isn't great, and it represents most of the new corn consumption over the last 20 years, but an enormous amount of US corn goes to pigs and cattle.

We need to just ban the use of facial recognition for all businesses by default, except where opted in.

We need broader protection

[–] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

We need to just ban the use of facial recognition for all businesses by default, ~~except where opted in.~~

FTFY. Some shit is too heinous to even allow people to opt into. It's the same reason we don't allow people to sell themselves into slavery, even if they "consent."

That goes double in an environment of corporatism, where antitrust law is hardly ever enforced and extreme differences in bargaining power between businesses and individuals are the norm.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 2 hours ago

You just pissed off 90% of people with smartphones

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 14 hours ago

Too late, I’m shopping at Aldi forever. I’m happy for the people who don’t have an Aldi near them, though.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Go ahead and just set prices for all goods and services, then shift manufacturing to what you expect we'll need for the next 5 years.

Oh no, I was being facetious.

“personalized price gouging” where stores use consumers’ sensitive personal information against them to raise prices.

Can someone explain this? I pay the price that's written on the shelf.

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago

Probably in online ordering. There are companies that have used your zip code to raise prices, and it's been rumored that individualized prices that go into your known profile to raise them have existed.
