As a parent this is my nightmare, and it's why we drive our kids everywhere. There are not enough safe, walkable roads in our neighborhood.

And then it's said, kids don't get enough sport/movement

Well, of course, if they always have to be driven to any activity.

We need to make our surroundings again safe for kids to play outside and just explore

I think back to when I was growing up and my parents said we weren’t allowed to walk on a main road. We did anyway, and I even remember walking to and from school (6 miles each way), and walking up a major boulevard in Charlotte (NC) just to go to Toys-R-Us to buy a new video game.

But times are way different now, and roads are not safe and drivers are either too distracted, can’t see over their steering wheels, or both. I would love to kick my kids out of the house for the day during the summer, but then something like this would happen.

My heart goes out to this family. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
