Canadian here - it's unclear. Doug Ford is a slimey politician first and an everything else second... smöl PP is floundering in the polls, and had he taken the tactic of Ford (taking a strong stance against American aggression), it's possible we could still be expecting a CPC majority government in the next election. I suspect this is Ford saying "You made your bed now sleep in it" and that he doesn't want to tarnish his image standing by a clearly sinking ship - it may also be a setup for a national party run but I think Ford is aware that he'd struggle in such a campaign so that seems less likely.
Doesn't seem super noteworthy. It does seem like yet another nail in smöl PP's coffin, but nothing close to a party fracture or anything of the kind.
I don't think it's an issue of his image, but of what he can personally benefit from it. He sees a sinking ship, so he's distancing himself from PP in the hopes of clinging to the other side in the hopes of getting some kickbacks.
Ford's far more slimey than you're giving him credit. It's obvious when you consider that he widely advertised the 25% energy surcharge, then backed off of it quietly when the US gave him some compliments and offered him a seat to a talk without a single promise, and he went around claiming he "did something" despite nothing coming out of it, all being paid for by taxpayers.
The surcharge would've been an easy win that even those of us that hate him would've openly cheered him for, only for him to prove that even his spine is made of slime.

completely agree. Ford is a populist cut from a different cloth than PP. He realized a lot quicker that Trump style conservative rule isn't going to fly here yet (hopefully never). He's also a lot more open to backing down when he realizes he read the room wrong instead of doubling down.

I will disagree with this however. Between Ford's meeting with Carney and other Feds from when the surcharge was added till now it feels more like he was asked to get onboard with a new tact. I honestly think he was better at being the blowhard but I'm willing to let this cook for a bit and see where it goes.
Well, pp is the federal conservative leader and fraud is the leader of the conservative party in Ontario.
Normally there is a decent relationship between the federal and provincial parties. These aren't normal times.
It could mean a number of things but the thing that stands out to me is it the leader of a major source of support saying no.
As a BCer I'd agree that is normally the case but there's significantly more independence between provincial and the federal parties than exists in the US. My example? Christy Clarke, the BC Liberal party former Premier who was more deeply conservative than Doug Ford.
Yeah, over here in NS we had a NDP leader who was more in the pocket of business than the cons at the time. Our premier distanced himself from pp during the last election. Though he's pulling all kinds of shady shit that should get a non confidence vote started.
@HikingVet Was that a typo, autocorrect or a purposefull turn of phrase? Fraud instead of Ford.
Intentional turn of phrase.
Others have given direct context but general context within Canada is that the federal parties and provincial parties are only tangentially related. However I would say historically Ontario has had the provincial parties most closely aligned to their federal counterparts.
Ontario also had a very odd habit of always voting in opposition to the federal party in power. (IE feds are liberal so we go conservative). Ford actually recently called an early election precisely because he was worried that PP would be in power federally which would have drastically harmed his performance if Ontario had its election as planned.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned here but is in the article is how odd it is that he turned down P but met personally not just with our new PM Carney of the liberals, but with Christia Freeland one of the most prominent federal liberals. She is also now the minister in charge of internal trade. Something currently both (if not all) parties are closely aligned on solving.
