A Democratic congresswoman has given a scathing review of the Trump administration’s so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida, describing it as an “internment camp” that needs to be “shut the hell down.”

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents Florida's 25th congressional district, said that pictures of the facility “don’t do it justice” and that detainees were being “packed into cages.”

On Saturday Florida lawmakers from both parties took a state-arranged tour of the new 3,000-bed detention center that the state rapidly built on an isolated airstrip surrounded by swampland in the Everglades.

Alligator Auschwitz Concentration (soon to be death) Camp.

[–] InternetRando@lemmy.myserv.one 78 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

STOP CALLING IT ALCATRAZ.

Alcatraz was for criminals who were found guilty in a trial.

This is AUSCHWITZ

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

On one hand, yes. On the other hand, every time I hear potential terrible plans on social media, it seems like they take it as a guide.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

"Now that we're here, what should we do?" "Gee, I don't know Tom. Let's see what the liberals on Reddit are crying about and do that."

[–] Jayve@lemmy.world 60 points 14 hours ago

Concentration camp.

[–] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 58 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

I want Democratic politicians to start talking about the proper response to this. I don't expect them to endorse people trying to perform armed raids against these facilities, but they need to start talking about holding people accountable. I'm sorry, but if you're working at a concentration camp, you need to be in prison at best, and possibly even hanged for crimes against humanity. We need to start talking NOW about putting all these ICE agents in jail when this is all over. These people are criminal scum who need to be prosecuted for their crimes. And to head off any possibility of a blanket pardon, we need to be talking about using extra-territorial rendition to try these people for crimes against humanity.

A presidential pardon will not save ICE agents from this legal liability. Even with a pardon, these agents can still be tried in the International Criminal Court or other body that practices universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity. And even beyond that, there are dozens of potential nations to send ICE agents to for their crimes. After all, they are committing crimes against humanity against the citizens of dozens of nations. If the ICC isn't viable, we can extradite these people to Venezuela, Mexico, or any number of other countries. These countries can then try them for the deaths of their citizens at the hands of ICE agents.

They simply don’t care about us. Only their billionaire donors.

[–] InternetRando@lemmy.myserv.one 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

"holding people accountable" is a worthless milquetoast phrase that at best means being "written up".

Demand PUNISHMENT.

[–] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 hours ago

I mean, obsess over performative semantics if you want. I just want to see the bastards hang.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

The whole point of statements by the likes of DWS is to signal to Americans that someone is trying to do something on their behalf. She described it as an internment camp and said it needs to be shut down, surely as a high ranking politician it means she'll be doing something to shut it down... It's just a pacifier for people's anger.

The Democrats are not your friend, they have the same overarching goal as the GOP: exploit workers and make capitalists richer.

Alligator Auschwitz serves that goal. They just make noise but as a party they are locked in, just like they made noise about children in cages under Trump the first term but completely forgot that it got even worse under Biden.

That scumbag would take it as an honor.

[–] boydster@sh.itjust.works 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Ooo this is a good one to add to the mix (edit: that feels gross to post, but catchy names are helpful for spreading the word, I hope that makes some semblance of sense, I'm gonna go puke now ugh)

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 15 points 14 hours ago (5 children)

For those of us not in Florida, how do we get this shut down?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 15 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Boycott American-made goods and services, and try not to support anything from American-owned companies.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 11 points 14 hours ago

Finally an excuse to buy these nice but somewhat pricey (actually more like fucking expensive) Italian guitar strings.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I live in the U.S., how do I boycott American goods exactly? I cant just buy all foreign...

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Do what you can. No-one needs to eschew all American things, but if everyone can cut down a little bit, their economy will feel the pain. A poor economy gives less for the tits in charge to hide behind.

[–] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 12 hours ago

Luigi. Hurricane season. There are no good honest answers.

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Do you mean without stepping foot in Florida? Probably nothing. And even then, it would take a Rambo style frontal assault.

Or, join the government and have a meeting about a meeting to decide if you’re going to have a meeting to decide if this is a situation that requires an action meeting.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world -2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (2 children)

Do you think only the government works that way with the whole meetings thing? Corporate america is like that as well, maybe worse even. And actually, I work as a federal contractor doing software stuff, and I dont attend meetings about meetings. Some of us, actually, most of us do have real shit to get done when they go to work.

TLDR: Meetings about meetings about meetings is for beaurocrats, not scientists and engineers.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Dude, no one is talking about you and we don't want to change the conversation to talk about you. That's weird.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Sure, but its also weird to insinuate that being a government employee of any kind means having meetings about meetings to decide if youre going to have a meeting about doing something.

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 1 points 9 hours ago

Help me understand why you took this personally. My first thought is neurodivergence, but I don’t wanna put labels on anyone.

[–] bacon_pdp@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

One could rent drones from Florida businesses nearby and if you are in a country that lacks an extradition treaty with the US Government; well…

[–] Pratai@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

You don’t. Sadly, we have nought but to get used to them.

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 13 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Once all those Jesus Lovers SEE and HEAR this they'll be the FIRST in Line to Shut it Down because we KNOW Jesus would NEVER stand for Jailing the Hurt, Innocent or Poor Immigrants!

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 3 points 13 hours ago

I talked to a user yesterday who thought it would be better if no photos or videos got released because then people would be more upset at the unknown.

[–] Pratai@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago

Watch how fast no one does a single thing about it.

[–] Blade9732@lemmy.world 11 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

OMG! You liberals are just grasping at straws now. This is not an internment camp, or a concentration camp. This is a freedom camp! Some call it a "Happy Camp®". It will be where these illegals can work their way to freedom. I hear DHS is going to put a nice slogan over the gate to avoid confusion, something like "Work Will Set You Free". If that doesn't work out, I am pretty sure the Trump administration with come up with a better solution. Some might say, a final solution!

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I watched the movie Tall Tale today and it had a jail called Liberty Jail

[–] Blade9732@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Tall tale? Was that the movie with Patrick Swaze as Pecos Bill? I haven't heard anyone talk about that movie in years, but I remember I loved Oliver Platt as Paul Bunyan.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

Yup, that's the one. It's on Disney+

[–] InternetRando@lemmy.myserv.one 9 points 8 hours ago
[–] Etterra@discuss.online 8 points 9 hours ago

No shit. We could have told you that from across the country.
