Move comes after rightwing Republican accuses New York City mayoral candidate of concealing support for ‘terrorism’

The Trump administration has raised the possibility of stripping Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City, of his US citizenship as part of a crackdown against foreign-born citizens convicted of certain offences.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, appeared to pave the way for an investigation into Mamdani’s status after Andy Ogles, a rightwing Republican representative for Tennessee, called for his citizenship to be revoked on the grounds that he may have concealed his support for “terrorism” during the naturalization process.

Mamdani, 33, who was born in Uganda to ethnic Indian parents, became a US citizen in 2018 and has attracted widespread media attention – and controversy – over his vocal support for Palestinian rights.

I'm stocking up on ammunition in case I need it for self-defense and using a no-log VPN when criticizing the government.

So I'm gonna go with "No."

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

fyi there is no such thing as a no log vpn; be careful out there.

also look into reloading. it’s not only economical but nerdy fun too.

For anyone in France, we might need some help

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Probably shouldn’t have made all those white flag jokes huh?

[–] don@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 hours ago

Grandfather fought in WWII and had nothing but kind words for the people of France. Never could understand the fuckery of those jokes, which is probably for the better.

No, but all the conservative evangelical "but suffering brings us closer to God" waste of space type people that want to live in the 1940s sure are having a hell of a hurrah though.

Human MAGAs should all inject bleach. It's good for you. I heard it on Fox News.

[–] don@lemmy.ca 21 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

First: ~~Human~~ MAGAs.

Second: I’m more of a proponent for aqueous fluoroantimonic acid instead of bleach, but do recognize the effectiveness and cost savings provided by bleach.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 14 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Wow, look at don knowing fancy words, like Aqua's fluoride animatronic acid

[–] don@lemmy.ca 13 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Thank you, fartographer ~stop it, autocorrect, I meant the f goddammit~, for your kind if maybe confusing compliment

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I have a friend named don. I just met them. It's you. You're my friend now.

Deal with it.

Disgusting. If they do this, we are actually living in a fascist state. Stripping citizenship from your political opponents? This is insane.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 68 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

If they do this, it is further confirmation that we are actually living in a fascist state.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

And the 2A-sexuals still don’t do shit about it

We are already living in a fascist state.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 22 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

We better start preparing for a stronger resistance now while we still can.

  1. find local communities and get involved to make connections
  2. We can effect things drastically with a general strike. This targets the establishment's income streams, and can bring a fascist government to its knees if done on a large enough scale.
  3. Contact a union and attempt to unionize your workplace so that the general strike is even more effective (plus, ya know, better pay and working conditions as a bonus!)

This method would not only work in the US, but anywhere in the world.

Union Suggestions:

  1. Continuing to participate in publicly visible resistance demonstrations like 50501 (the next one is July 17th) to encourage others to stand up with you and prove to that there are millions of others who will join them in the fight. A large part of Nazi Germany's success in taking over the country was a lack of massive public demonstrations against the new regime, making people feel helpless and afraid to take a stand.

If we put in the work, we can resist this and we can win. Look at how effective these methods were when used in Chile in 2019.. If we completely reject the political system and rebel on a mass scale, there is NOTHING they can do to stop us.

THAT's the trigger point where you will accept that you live in a fascist country?? Have you been asleep since january?

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Long story short is that America has literally been going through "First they came for ..." for months now.

I can already see the headlines from later this year and the next, about how "no one could see it coming" and "why didn't anyone warn me(better)". You can actually just go to communities making fun of pro-brexit folk and see the same quotes from them afterwards.

Whoa there America. That sounds like some good ol” fashioned American fascism right there

[–] don@lemmy.ca 12 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The fuckass conservatives have long since been brainwashed into fantasizing about being fascist, and the democratic leadership has done pretty much fuckall about it.

[–] UlyssesOnlyOnce@lemmy.coffee 25 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Its a good thing Democratic leadership has condemned this. They obviously don't like the man and see him as a threat, but Trump's actions are far worse. They did stand up for him right? Right?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 11 points 6 hours ago

They stand up for him in the most feeble, token way, once they're sure it won't affect the outcome. Then they'll regretfully run Cuomo.

Nothing is off the table for the fascist Trump administration, absolutely nothing.

[–] Truthtwopower@lemmy.zip 21 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

We live in scary times man.

"Terrorism" as in "Taxing the rich"?

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 14 points 2 hours ago

At some point, some country will need to send a task force to El Salvador to liberate people from the concentration camp there.

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 13 hours ago

Relax everyone, this is all a part of the democratic process.

[–] j0ester@lemmy.world 12 points 1 hour ago

Marco Rubio first. POS birthright citizenship. Or let’s deport Ted Cruz. I’m sure Canada will love to have his head on a stick.

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.ca 9 points 10 hours ago

Damn they really out there brainstorming
