President Donald Trump on Thursday pulled the U.S. out of an agreement with Washington, Oregon and four American Indian tribes to work together to restore salmon populations and boost tribal clean energy development in the Pacific Northwest, deriding the plan as “radical environmentalism” that could have resulted in the breaching of four controversial dams on the Snake River.

The deal, known as the Resilient Columbia Basin Agreement, was reached in late 2023 and heralded by the Biden administration, tribes and conservationists as historic. It allowed for a pause in decades of litigation over the harm the federal government’s operation of dams in the Northwest has done to the fish.

Under it, the federal government said it planned to spend more than $1 billion over a decade to help recover depleted salmon runs. The government also said that it would build enough new clean energy projects in the Pacific Northwest to replace the hydropower generated by the Lower Snake River dams — the Ice Harbor, Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Lower Granite — should Congress ever agree to remove them.

MAGA Conservatives hate conservation especially if it involves indigenous people, another group they’d prefer to be forcibly removed. Also, salmon and caring for ecosystems is WOKE.

Eh, I disagree. I'm a huge outdoorsman and I meet a lot of MAGA. They value conservation just as much as I do. However, they still have a complete disconnect until something impacts them personally.

There is no possible valid reason to do this.

This is the reason. It's an absolutely terrible reason. But we're at the point where the 2nd Amendment folks are cheering the deployment of National Guard and Marines against protesters.

Spite is always a valid reason to the spiteful.

From the very limited viewpoint of Trump's self-interest, how is this an error? Nobody who is upset by this decision was ever going to vote for Trump anyway.

Because this costs money and time in the medium and long term. Concerning myself with the opinions of the obscenely uneducated is just not something I’m interested in doing.

If only McDonald’s had a salmon burger this could easily have been avoided.

If the agreement was reached 2 years ago, does he legally have the ability to just decide not to do it?(I know it wouldn't stop him.)

by the way all or most the alantic salmon we eat comes from salmon farms from mostly norway. most other salmons species are caught wild, because its next to impossible to farm the others ones.

Why are all the anti-fascism comments getting removed? Is any comment that refers to fascism removed? Testing testing?
