Your tinfoil seems fairly likely. The whole point of Trump right now is to be a fall guy that the new regime can blame for the worst of what they're about to do. So they'll want some things signed before the switch out.

How big of a rock do you have to live under to NOT know who Rupert Murdock is? He has been in the news pretty much every week for months, if not longer.
You underestimate how ignorant the average person is capable of being.
For example:
I work with blue collar people. Vast majority of them definitely have no idea who Murdoch is. Those same people don't know the bias of the wsj or probably what the New York post is.
Some of them vote. They never ever check sources or try to understand forces behind it.
It's fun though seeing how talking points get filtered down through sources they see.
if they dont know who rupert is, they wont know who lachlan who is currently the one controlling fox(and not NEWS CORP). Its funny i only ever see them qoute the fox and right wing talking head out of context.

murdoch has to play nice with trump, because Putin works with murdoch(they have been seen together) to disseminate which kind of propaganda of the week.
Lachlan is more extreme than murdoch by the way. hence why rupert is trying to give his inheritence to him instead of the other children, who do not like his far-right wing views.
