I would argue that it happens to mediocre drivers. Good drivers slow down and get into the correct lane a mile or two in advance.
Like there aren't exits you need to take immediately after a junction merger.
Literally me in Ohio.. I got cut off on an exit, and next exit wasn't for 30 miles.

Took the wrong route home cuz I was high and didn't realise it until 1h later. Had the choice of going through the next city or going back 30m for the right road.
