The End of Policing. Basically shows how every topic it touches would be better served by social welfare programs. Also demonstrates how much money is wasted by the current approach to addressing the topics. Spoiler: advocates socialism. I bought this book for multiple people because I found it so compelling.

After the Fact: The Truth About Fake News. Argues that we have a fake democracy.

The Jakarta Method. Shows how Indonesia, and other countries, were prepared to rise to the world stage before being cut off at the knees by capitalists. The phrase “third world,” meant third round of ascension (USA, Soviets, now their turn), not “backward.” But we sabotaged them and prevented their assent.

A People’s History of the United States. This is well-known enough that I won’t elaborate.

These are off the top of my head. If I was at home, I’d scan my bookshelves for more recommendations. Maybe I’ll see this post later when I’m there and update my comment. Happy reading!

You know what? Lemme give you a fun one: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Cheers.

I think OP was going for fiction.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 17 hours ago

My bad. I mostly don't read fiction, but I did enjoy The Girl with all the Gifts. Also, Oil, by Upton Sinclair. American Psycho was the most disturbing fiction I've read, truly hard to get through at times. Plus Brave New World, 1984, Animal Farm. Starship Troopers was good. Some people think it advocates fascism. I think it just uses fascism as a plot device. Make up your own mind.

The Third World orignally meant unaligned with the West or Warsaw Pact nations

Lamb- The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal.

It’s the story of Yeshua as a child/teen and his dipshit buddy. It’s hilarious.

This is a manga, but it's technically a book: Goodnight Punpun.

I'm really into the scifi works by Ann Leckie, ancillary justice is the first book in the series, I highly recommend if you like space operas.

My all time favourite is Peter F Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga + Void Trilogy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Saga

Currently enjoying Brandon Sanderson's various Cosmere books a ton too, although book 5 of stormlight is a bit disappointing it's still an excellent series
