I'm thinking of trying to put a handle on the back of an old satellite dish.
TL;DW:
nothing < ear plugs < shop headphones < riot shield
but the most interesting method is to direct the sound back at the source (inverted riot shield).

Nice thing is for sound you don't need strong material you could get away with kind of cheap corrugated plastic that outdoor sale signs are made of maybe even some good posterboard
riot shields that curve outward are commonly referred to as "capture" riot shields

We live in a fascist country. And it has been all of our lives.
If you're not wearing ear-pro, why are you even confronting these men? Also, get a gas mask. (There's a learning curve to all this.)
I would think if you made a parabolic shield of like plexi or something dense you could protect your hearing.
