Lowercase-C conservatives deserve better.
As you say though, at least the small-c conservatives (if any remain) have something close to their ideal Prime Minister right now. It's the rest of us who are less well represented.

This is an extremely good point. Perhaps I should have addressed this in my ~~rant~~ opinion piece, because it's absolutely true. I've been confused by the Green Party's whiplash and underwhelmed by the federal NDP's muted approach.
I will admit that I have enjoyed seeing Singh getting sharper in his criticism in recent months, and wish we could have seen more of that for the past years. He is saying things that need to be said, and I commend him for that. But I imagine a world where Charlie Angus won in 2017 and that feels like a better world than this one.
I hope out of the ashes of all this we can get someone on the left we deserve too. Call me naive but I have this intangible gut feeling that we will? That if Singh resigns, the current mood is such that we have a chance of getting someone really inspiring to take charge of the left going forward? I sincerely hope we do.
Charlie Angus gets mentioned a lot. It's too bad he didn't win the last leadership race. And that he's stepping down.
I know it sounds like hyperbole but the thought really does make me want to cry, especially as he's ramped up so effectively in recent months.
Thank you for articulating this perspective so coherently in your ~~rant~~ opinion piece.
My thinking is not so evolved as yours, but I agree with you. It’s often said that we vote conservative as we get older, and I’ve been looking forward to such a mythical time. But the disheartening lack of basic human decency, no tenable policies, and the incessant puerile attacks by right-leaning candidates has made it impossible for me to support them and be in alignment with my own values.
Now, I see Carney as an old-school “progressive conservative” I always wished I could vote for. In his inaugural speech, Carney promoted “fiscal responsibility, social justice, and international leadership.” Sign me up!
Bonus: go ‘Berta boy, go!
I’ll just postulate that Mark Carney may be the Paul Martin we should have given a chance.
I'm hopeful that he will be! It will be a difficult time and we really do need the best right now.
The lack of “Small-c’s” or “Red Tories” have been sorely lacking in our political discourse. One of my favourite things to point out to conservative voters is how far they swung to the right in their party policy but when you speak one on one with people, all that red Tory stuff comes back. Then there’s this little ah-ha moment in their eyes and you can see the reconsideration of the party.
It’s nice now that the provincial NDP is essentially the PC party before Klein.
