Starbase was officially formed earlier this month after Musk’s aerospace and defense contractor prevailed in a local election. It is now run by officials who are SpaceX employees and former employees.

As of early this year, the population of Starbase stood at around 500 people, with around 260 directly employed by SpaceX, the Texas Tribune reported. Most other residents of Starbase are relatives of SpaceX employees.

I've never heard anything good about company towns. Doesn't mean it can't happen. To me it just seems like another way for a company to control the workers and a quick path to indentured servitude.

Wait until they bring back scrip under the guise of a company crypto token.

I'd say it's a good thing we have laws against that, but the GOP has the supreme court now and is hell bent on undoing everything. Thanks protest non voters.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social -4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I enjoy seeing people whinge about the election as if any vote can fix this now.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Who said I'm whining? I enjoy informing protest non voters of what they voted for. And the resulting gymnastics of course.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

So there was no way votes could've been possibly gerrymandered or manipulated? That which now will be completely failed to rectify for the forseeable future.

E: Just for the record, I voted same as you did if you didn't vote for this shit now.

Nice deflection from the topic of protest non voting. I enjoy watching the mental gymnastics.

*Lol nice downvote. I enjoy watching the emotions too.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I also didn't downvote you, must've been anyone else.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world -2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Downvoted within 10 minutes. Sure. In any case, notice how you focused on that instead of your deflection? So another deflection. I enjoy watching the gymnastics.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I can't downvote multiple times :p

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Actually it's pretty easy to. But notice how you're trying to make that the focus of conversation, and making me explain, rather than the actual topic of protest non voting? I enjoy watching your ducking and weaving.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

We're on the same side of this... you have yet to make a point.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I made my point a long time ago. You attacked me. Now I'm just enjoying watching you duck and weave.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So I focus on people who didn't vote in the past and forget about gerrymandering, got it.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

There's the same deflection again. It's sure fun to watch.

You also found the point after saying you couldn't find the point. Fun to watch.

[–] 7toed@midwest.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah cause its a shit point. Im done engaging

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

And now another attack! I enjoy watching the mental gymnastics.

[–] teamevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And that's why they want to crash the dollar...now I get it

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmynsfw.com 38 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What a truly grotesque situation

Some narcissistic cunt wades in and ruins people's lives, and there's zero accountability

America is fucked, and Texas & similarly stupid states are absolute disasters

[–] SwingingTheLamp@midwest.social 11 points 1 week ago

No, this is a misleading headline. The city is proposing a zoning change, and it's required to give property owners notice using boilerplate language as set out in Texas law. Residential zones are typically the most restrictive, so the move to mixed-use zoning actually will allow owners more options for the use of their own property.

[–] Gerudo@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

They voted to give the town over to the company. No sympathy from me.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

in Texas, you say

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 30 points 1 week ago

Goddamn we're colonizing the colonizers with wealthier colonizers...

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 week ago

I think on occasion NIMBY is the correct stance. Not often, but sometimes.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Anyone stupid enough to associate with space nazis deserves the consequences of that association.

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They lived there first. He built a spaceport next door and is now threatening them that he'll be stealing their land.

How is this their fault?

[–] omgboom@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They chose to live in Texas

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah thats context I didn't have. My bad I guess I had assumed they moved there for work like a company town sort of thing.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Soo basically don’t work in spaceflight in the US.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

NASA still exists, though the space nazis are trying to kill that too. And yes I know NASA is the original space nazis but when the option is former or current I would choose former if I were forced to choose.

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Lolol. Fuck Texass.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The notice, sent to property owners in a proposed “Mixed Use District,” would allow for “residential, office, retail, and small-scale service uses.”

[–] markstos@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Right. Seems like a common rezoning change. There’s a trend towards more mixed use.

This does not appear to be exceptional.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I know those words but that sentence makes no sense

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

It's like they are trying to take us back to the past when they abused the hell out of people.

They are just lucky Americans are generally uneducated and don't know any better.

[–] Lojcs@lemm.ee -4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh no mixed use zoning what shall they ever do

Edit: did yall not read the article? Or is the kneejerk so strong that you can't override it? They're converting the zoning to mixed residential, office, retail, and small-scale service. Nobody's losing their homes. The 'lose right to use property' in the title is from the legal boilerplate and conveniently cuts off 'for its current use', which would apply to industrial plants and such if the area was zoned so.

I used to think people with enough awareness to come over to lemmy from reddit would be the less guillable ones. It's disappointing to see people rage at clickbait just the same
