I've been on Lemmy for ~3 Months and it's nice but picking a instance, figuring out which web UI works for me, figuring out which Mobile App works for met etc. was a lot, and most people would have given up.

I've been using PieFed for the last few days, and wow I like it so much more, it solved so many of the UX issues that Lemmy has.

These features make a BIG impact, most of the common things people on Reddit complain about when you promote Lemmy isn't a issue on PieFed.

My favourite feature is de-duplication, on PieFed if I view eg. this post https://piefed.social/post/749818#comment_6102866

It combines/aggregates it with cross-posts/reposts

So I can see it in one place, and see all the comments in one place.

Have you tried out PieFed? What are your thoughts?

Are there any apps for piefed?

Thunder for Lemmy has been great, not sure if there's anything like that for piefed or not

[–] Fitik@fedia.io 8 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Interstellar supports it, alongside Lemmy and MBin

[–] Keeponstalin@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago

Multi-server support

Connects to multiple Fediverse software, including Mbin, Lemmy, and PieFed.

Hey now that's pretty slick, thanks! I think I'll give it a shot

I use this as the "Mobile App"
https://join.piefed.social/docs/piefed-mobile/

With the features PieFed has, it's a better experience than any of the Lemmy apps I've tried

ngl, i like uaing piefed on a browser

I can open multiple posts in background tabs and I can get back to them as when I want to

It kind of makes me not minding piefed doesn't have many apps supporting it

Even the fact we have different pieces of software to access the "Fediverse forums" is already great, we shouldn't rely too much on any single dev team. Plus as you said, it has some nice features.

A few features I like:

  • different "disclaimers" for federated instances. For example, if you access a Beehaw post from PieFed, it shows "This post is hosted on beehaw.org which has higher standards of behaviour than most places. Be nice."
  • user attitude, based on how you up/downvote stuff. It's both a great tool for moderators and a way to analyse your own behaviour.
  • the "related communities" in the sidebar is a great way to discover new comms to follow.

And the sidebar in mobile view is way at the bottom of the page

Just in case someone forgot the rules of a comm and posted a rule breaking post like me :P

No decent app yet that I know of. The PWA is good but I can't increase the font size on my phone so I'm still on Voyager for now, but keep checking.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Ok you can change the font size now. Look in the User Interface section of the settings.

It's saved in a cookie so you can have different sizes on different devices.

Perfect!

Mbin does this too, I'm surprised to hear Lemmy doesn't. Feels expected to have something like this with how fragmented the fediverse is.

Glad that you like Piefed !

[–] taco@piefed.social 3 points 23 hours ago

Totally agree. I started just testing it out, but it's my daily driver at this point.

[–] doctortofu@reddthat.com 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

PieFed looks fantastic, but I wish there was a seamless way to migrate to it from Lemmy - I spent a LOT of time customizing my feed, blocking some communities, subscribing to others, that sort of thing, and I honestly don't feel like doing it all from scratch...

Actually, Is there a way to automate it in some way? Probably not, since PF is structured differently, right?

[–] rimu@piefed.social 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You can export your settings from Lemmy and import them into PieFed.

[–] doctortofu@reddthat.com 3 points 16 hours ago

Really? That's awesome! At work now, but let me try to do that later, thanks so much for the info!

I love the deduplication feature on piefed. It's great

I also love that it has custom multi-comm feeds like subreddits. I still haven't made one for myself though, since the default topics — multi-comm feeds as well — already works quite well.

Those two, combined with their onboarding process, I think makes it the better "platform" to get new users IMO

It helps with having a handholding experience to jumpstart a new user, and not make it as "dead" looking or having to suffer All with American politics posts

I tried Lemmy way back when the APIcalypse happened but it never stuck.

I tried again earlier this year because of something happening again at reddit and decide to also try mbin because of built in support for microblogs. Turns out I still don't care about microblogs if everyone that I follow on X isn't here. It's also "just another Lemmy" but with microblog support in my short term using it

Them I decided to finally try piefed. Ever since I created this account it's been my main and never accessed my LW, lemmyzip, fedia and kbinearth accounts again lol

What I think can help with a unique problem of the Fediverse—accessing content from other instances via your home piefed instance—being built in to piefed somehow instead of relying on browser extensions that still doesn't support non Lemmy clients and instances
