Absolutely agree, but I'm continuously surprised at how many people don't WANT to think for themselves. It's not that they lack the ability or their IQ is too low, they simply have decided to outsource their goddamn morality. That's perhaps worse than simple ignorance.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Imagine meeting your Creator and when he asks you why you cheated on/abused your wife and destroyed your family and their psyches, or why you supported ideologically and financially the death and destruction of innocents around the world, or why you spread corruption in the land for coin, among other questions and you're just "idk 🤷".
The 'I was just following orders!' folks will burn in Hell forever, and the 'but I didn't know!' when they could've easily known is definitely there in great numbers as well...
It's really not surprising when you think about it. Evolution favored individuals in our species who worked smarter, not harder. We're the quintessential shortcut pilled species, that's why we made tools and discovered fire. Of course we're going to full send it all the way to outsourcing thinking

One of the things I've seen with current junior staff is that they have grown up with computer text for everything, which makes reading non-OCR text very difficult and a learned skill for them. Since I work in a field with scanned handwritten documents, this makes their work much slower.
I wonder if the same problem will happen with AI, where future generations will expect a computer to create connections between different documents.
To the level of your ability. I say this because I certainly but up against my limitation and at some point you have to recognize someone with expertise and take their advice. So you can decide things based on what you know but when you don't know things well enough you have to sorta meta decide. Medical is an obvious example. I will certainly do some internet research with my help and well being but when it comes to the yearly I have a discussion and listen to the advice of my doctor. I will decide if and how much of their advice to take but if im not taking their advice I should likely get another primary care as I obviously do not feel confident with their expertise. I may take into account what I think their biases are but I have to take into account what I think my own biases are as well. Im a pretty high functioning individual who has several degrees, pretty much liked school, and is used to learning new things regularly. There is no shame in recognizing and taking advice from someone who you think has better expertise than yourself. On the other hand some folks do just not even try and want any random person to just do their mental work. At the very least the person should look at what the decision is and evaluate their own capacities and have a reason why they want a particular someone to help them out.
Whence cometh the experts expertise? They had to do the work to get there.
I can, and I do benefit from other people's skills and efforts. That is the content of society.
Our culture trains us to value only the output of our work and regard the process as nothing but liability—but for the results, an abject waste of time and resources. And so, the masters of our society attempt to eliminate every expenditure that does not yield an immediate return. So they extinguish the light of human culture, which is the expression of our creative activities.
