Thinking of what else someone like me (an older person) could do in order to prepare myself to support Ontario in emergencies. I came across Ontario Corps. Posting it here just in case it is something that interests you.

Today I learned about non-military “civil defence” which this seems to be an example of. It was an interview on the new “elbows up” podcast. Many countries have much more robust programs (Scandinavia, Northern Europe). Like the entire population being trained in first aid, preparedness, and communications. Lots also have mandatory military service or at least more trained reserves.

Sounds like a good year to plant a "victory garden".

If this doesn't work for someone, there's also Red Cross. They have volunteers teams that help people even with small scale disasters like someone's home burned down. It's not a big disaster, but for a family that's perhaps lost everything, having someone to sit with them, give them blankets and maybe some food is a help.
