MODERATORS

Hello everyone,

My friends and I are developing a fediverse hosting service as part of a worker owned democratic company. We're committed to building on European infrastructure and, wherever possible, using green service providers for server hosting, S3 storage, and more. We are based in Denmark.

We're currently seeking users for our alpha/demo phase who would like to host their own Mastodon instance with us for free. All you need to provide is your own domain.

As this is an alpha release, please note the service comes "as is" with potential downtime, bugs, lacks and defects. Ideally, we're looking for users interested in building an active community on their instance, which helps us properly test our system.

We've implemented robust backup solutions, so at worst, instances can be restored from backups. You'll always have the freedom to export your data when our demo phase concludes if you choose not to continue with our paid service.

If you're interested or have questions about the project, please contact me here or via email at contact@wilian.me.

Best regards, W

Edit: Thank you all for your interest. Things are still taking shape as we’re developing the platform. Therefore I can’t give meaningful answers to your questions, since everything is still to be settled. This is in a very early phase, so please just see this post as an invitation to try having a Mastodon instance for free for a while. I’m looking forward to giving a more elaborate presentation of the project in the future.

How would it be any different from https://masto.host/, https://elest.io/ or https://communick.com/ (All of them provide mastodon hosting exclusively on European infrastructure)?

It would probably be quite similar

What services? Mastodon? Lemmy? Anything federated?

It says Mastodon in the title. But i'll edit the body, to make it more clear :)

Oh, hah. I double checked the whole post, but forgot to look in the obvious spot 😅

Cool project! I hope it takes off.

One question, I know Mastodon has become a sort of market standard for the microblogging fediverse — but for people who just want a single-user/"vanity" instance, wouldn't it make sense to offer something leaner like GoToSocial?

Because GTS is less resource intensive than Mastodon, that could then also be an environmental argument?

AFAIK, Communick is the only service provider offering GoToSocial (disclaimer, I am the owner).

With servers in Europe, maybe. I've seen K&T pop up in search results, but they're in Florida... But the more to choose from in the Eurozone the better, right?

Edit: There's also FediMonster with servers in Germany.

How would this be different than just a normal hosting provider

The Mastodon software seems to be in a kind of anti-sweetspot for this kind of hosting service. It kinda sucks that other better options have so much less name recognition that marketing becomes hard.
