Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

The chief of Germany’s foreign intelligence service warned that his agency has “concrete” evidence that Russia is planning an attack on Nato territory.

Bruno Kahl, the outgoing head of Germany’s federal intelligence service (BND), said in a rare interview that Russian leadership no longer believes Nato’s article 5 guarantee of mutual assistance will be honoured — and may seek to test it.

“We are very sure, and we have intelligence evidence to back this up, that [Russia’s full-scale invasion of] Ukraine is only one step on Russia’s path towards the west,” he told a podcast of German outlet Table Briefings.

Kahl qualified that “this doesn’t mean that we expect large tank battalions to roll from the east to the west.”

Kahl said: “We see that Nato is supposed to be tested in its mutual assistance promise. There are people in Moscow who don’t believe that Nato’s article 5 still works.”

While the war is still confined to Ukrainian territory, the German internal secret service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), has warned that Moscow is increasingly extending the conflict to western countries through cyberwarfare and espionage.

Russia has in particular taken to deploying so-called low-level agents to commit acts of sabotage, according to the BfV annual report, which was presented in Berlin on Wednesday. They are believed to have been deployed to plant incendiary devices in parcels, which caused a series of fires in European logistics hubs last year.

“We have noticed that Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has led to our cyber and espionage defences being increasingly tested,” Sinan Selim, vice-president of the BfV, said.

Stop peddling this fucking propaganda. Now.

Please have a look at what this account is posting day in day out. If not a state actor, who would post nothing but fear mongering about China and Russia all over this platform. He’s been called out a couple of times. Don’t get riled up by provocateurs like this.

Its not propaganda. They are as evil as trump and the reason trump got elected. Just cause you huff nazi propaganda and/or live far and are ignoring everything does not mean russia is not been waging a war on nato countries.

Yes they are evil. But they are not that powerful. Instead of standing up to the fascist US we see Europe talking a lot about independence but actually falling in line with the US completely. There is no dependable diplomacy anymore. While policy towards Russia seems unclear, it isn’t towards China. We are preparing for WWIII and we don’t even care who we will entrust all this weapons with. The fascists in Europe only have to wait for an incredible arsenal to use as they please. And we see the fascists ally with the US now rather than Russia.

They are powerful in the way they use underhanded espionage, propaganda and flood internet with bots. Almost all the right wing parties in the western world are kremlin backed in one way or another. Russophobia is a legit word russian propaganda machine invented to drum up resistance against their imperialism, genocide and future plans of expanding it to even more countries.

The west doesnt even know all the evil shit china does on a daily basis.

Either europe rearms and survives or europe doesnt rearm because """wachist might get gunzz"""" and we get our pets nailed to the wall, men and women and children raped in torture dungeons, children abducted and entire villages with everyone in it razed to the ground.

Don’t you think it’s very strange how everybody despises the people they want to give incredible military power to. And mostly those are still considered somewhat moderate. But they too goad us into believing war is inevitable.

Then again these moderates never had any kind of problem with their ally parading around with a mostly overt fascist foreign policy for more than half a century. At least now we should at least acknowledge that and accept that the west is in no way a benign empire in any way.

War is invenetable. You are fucking looking at a dark grey sky with thunder in distance while drops of water are falling saying it wont rain.

What will be your position in such a war? I mean, do you imagine yourself to be a soldier, a medic, a propagandist, a producer of military equipment?
