It's bizarre that US uses "sleeping with" to mean "had sex with". Readers clearly understand, she uses the word "sex" in her quotes, but the magazine/site insists on using that bizarre euphemism.
I don't think that that's very uncommon. When one "goes to the bathroom", it's understood that this is a euphemism for urinating or defecating, not just hanging out there.
Agreed. It just seems like a weird editorial decision. Maybe it's because I'm not a regular US reader, or I live in a different country, but it seems to slightly obfuscate what happened.
You're looking way too deep into it. "Sleeping with someone" is such a common expression that nobody can possibly hope to obfuscate anything with it. Everybody knows they fucked. There will be no mistakes, no confusion. Besides, it's not unusual for different contexts to use different phrases and expressions for the same thing. The press using a "softer" language is not a uniquely American thing by a long shot and it's kinda weird to assume it would be.
Not an American either btw.
TIL I've been doing it wrong my whole life /s
I am currently using the bathroom... I mean defecating.
The same turn of phrase exists in e.g. German.
I've always hated the saying. Clearly you're not sleeping if you're boning...
One fewer word/syllable.
I think they should pare it down further though, and just say 'fucking'
Seconded.
Jfc it’s just as bizarre as every other fucking cultures language on earth but I get it, it’s popular to shit on America while it’s fighting a civil war that was never declared. Easier than realizing this shit show is coming for you next.
I'm not talking about the US, I'm talking about US Magazine. I've seen other US publications use "sex" to refer to sex.
The "Us" in "Us Magazine" isn't all caps
The great irony being that Us Magazine is a tabloid that reports almost exclusively on celebrity gossip - people who clearly aren't "Us"
You mean to tell me that when someone says that they're taking a shit, it shouldn't mean literally turd burgaling?
