It’s not about the suit, it’s about the hypocrisy. He acts like Christianity is so important to him, but knows nothing about the religion or customs, and mocked Zelenskyy for not respecting the White House enough to wear a proper suit.

Not only that, but I think a lot of the criticism is a result of Republicans decade+ long history of finding ridiculous things to start controversy about. Recall Obama's tan suit, or, of course, "Why aren't you wearing a suit?"

That doesn't really make much sense considering wearing black to a funeral has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. That is a custom that originated in the Roman Empire.

The surviving relatives of the deceased (and ONLY the surviving relatives, NOT friends or others) would wear what was called a toga pulla, which was a dark or black toga to signify to others that they were mourning the death of a relative. It didn't matter if the Romans that did this were Christian or not, because that was a Roman custom, not a Christian one.

I don't really see where there would be any hypocrisy whether he was wearing a black or blue suit. He is dressed in formal attire that shows respect for the occasion of honoring a deceased person. This is different from what you mention, when Zelensky wore clothing that was not formal to a formal event. That would obviously be taken as a sign of disrespect in many cultures around the world, and clearly it was taken that way on that occasion.

I mean, Trump definitely gives a lot of reason to dislike him, but in this particular instance, the complaint made in this meme that Trump didn't wear a black suit seems to be a bit if a ridiculous nitpick, IMO.

Correct. The Pope is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s customary to wear black to a Catholic funeral.
