That's because most people don't train their cats. They let them get away with stuff as a kitten because it's cute, so when they're adults and the behavior is an actual issue, it's much harder to train out.

But I wasn't even talking about them scratching on the furniture. Pet nails often touch the surface they're standing on, so they will cause damage by just existing if allowed on the furniture.
