If this ever happens, do it from your own instance or make sure the owner doesn't mind. Don't make the volounteers running instances afraid of knocking to their door.

I heard PeerTube was going to work on live streaming, I have no idea how far they got

It is already supported in Peertube and works fine.

I don’t know if this is the kind of feature that really fits Lemmy. I feel like it would be better suited as part of a video streaming platform or a stand alone piece of software. Owncast is a self hosted live streaming platform. Just keep in mind that you will essentially be running an IPTV service, which broadcasters really don’t like and if it gets big enough you might get a knock on your door.

A livestream is just a particular link or media. You would have to implement support in the clients we use. Probably not too hard for web-based clients, could be done in a day
