My grandfather actually prevented Nazis from getting shot. They had surrendered and some others wanted to shoot them anyway. By preventing some Nazis from getting shot, my grandfather prevented a war crime from happening.
I'm not so naive as to believe it went this way everywhere during the war. In fact I know a guy from my home town who killed a civilian in Italy for no reason. Just an old guy walking down the road killed for no reason. There was no court martial, he just got chewed out by his CO and they moved on. So there was a war criminal living my home town. The other old fellas never talked to home but most people didn't know anything about what he did in the war.
So I understand that not everyone that fought in WWII (the "good" war) were good people. There were many war criminals on the allied side, we just don't talk about it much. But my grandfather was a good man for preventing those soldiers from being executed. I felt like I owed it to him to learn about why Germany gave into the Nazis.
I'm seeing the people go down that same path today. The same rationalizations for antisemitism the Nazis used are being used again. It's shameful that the younger generation can't pick up a history book and see the mistakes they're making. Why would you want to be the antisemitic generation?
I've also looked at the photos of German cities at the end of the War. They're the same as photos of Gaza today. This is what hatred leads to. The German people were able to move past the cycle of hatred and become a prosperous country.
Right here I'm not seeing people wanting to move past their hatred and build something better. It seems people don't want to build a prosperous Palestinian state, they just want to stay in a cycle of hatred and violence forever.
You may feel like reconciling with Israelis is weak, but the alternative is another war like the one we just witnessed happening again. Is that what you want? The real weakness is wanting more Palestinians to die for the sake of some manufactured hatred of Jews.
