I mean, yeah... what did you expect? Lemmy is composed of a lot of groups, but let's not pretend that the 'average' person is here. We're a bunch of wallflowers, nerds, introverts, tech enthusiasts, etc.... Groups that typically dismiss small talk and want to dive into deep discussions of hobbies.

One of our hobbies is commiserating on one of the things that brought us here: the rise of fascism in america that has brought with it an extreme polarization of corporate controlled media. It feels good to know you're not alone, especially when 'real life' conversations will drive you up a wall of purposeful ignorance masquerading as an elite snobbery of being too good for politics or a common man meme of not thinking that politics is useful or influential of one's life.

Plus, going back to the first point, emotions are tightly controlled during the day. The little bursts of anger, rage, fury, and pity that the political articles certainly release right now are going to be much more stimulating (and a controlled stimulation at that, which we love) than (just looking at that piefed feed...) answering a direct question at me about rice in a burrito... or the rather insipid (and sounding like something you'd see at some corporate controlled space so everyone can feel oooh, coooooozy) ones about going on holiday.... writing poetry... how's my week going... what's made me smile or laugh recently...

About the only two posts there that even seem interesting are the star trek / alien crossover, and the one seeing a social media addict. And interesting is what brings people in.
