I'd show up, hang in a bit.

<asking to hear a statement again a couple of times>

"Sorry guys. Just not with it today. My uncle died last night, had to come in, having a hard time concentrating."

Notice I didn't throw my boss under the bus? :) But the question of why I had to come in festers like a lingering fart. Now the boss has to play the good guy, or praise me for me sacrifice. Either way he looks an ass and I said nothing against him.

Play it from there.

I’d say I wasn’t showing up, then I wouldn’t show up.

You're not understanding the position this person is in. Many Indian techs have no fucking choice.

My wife's Filipino and is scared shitless to call in sick. She's knocking it out the park at her job, works at home most days so I know how she's doing. "But will they fire me if I call in?"

Her employer finally fired her friend after missing 2-weeks, and then a month, among other scattered call-ins. (For context, the friend is bugfuck nuts, not the sort of person you want as a friend or coworker.)

At this point you should admit you are privileged.

I’m not arguing with your point that a lot of people have no choice about going to work, but why is your wife scared? Her employer seems quite tolerant. Her friend wasn’t fired until missing a lot of work. I don’t understand.

It sounds like he's saying his wife is still traumatized from her work experience in the Philippines.

You still missed being with your family, and no one really gives a fuck about how distraught you look. Congrats, you got played.

If you're forced into a fight, you might as well hit back.

And congrats! You have the privilege of making that choice.

It's because of people who fought, that we enjoy that 'privilege'.
