(Washington DC) As democrats break ranks to end the government shutdown with no concessions, leaders for the party made clear that their actions so far will guide future actions as well. “This fight was one of many we’ll face when it comes to the needs of the American people,” said Chuck Shumer to reporters, “and we can promise Americans that this is the best they’re going to get.”

The 40-day shutdown is the longest in US history, and for over a month, essential workers have been required to work for no pay, as food subsidies ran out for low income Americans last week. Some in the party say the democrats have no direction going forward, but Schumer denies this. “Sure, we lost this fight, and the president may refuse to pay some people who worked in the shut down, and it may take months to restore food subsidies. But don’t forget what we got for our efforts.”

Republicans likewise note that they won’t stop fighting until Americans have no rights, either.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like these Lemmy-original stories don't really belong on this sub.

Not to knock on your writing OP (some of these are pretty funny), but if everyone posted what is basically The Onion fanfiction then this sub would be nothing but, and the selection of topics being satirized would be even more narrow than it already is.

What's the difference between this and other non-Onion sites? It's all just a person online writing satire.

Lack of an editorial department.

Established satire sites will have articles about a broader selection of topics by a broader set of writers. A sub with nothing but Lemmy users posting their homebrew satire would probably satirize little besides American politics. An echo chamber, in other words. There's only so many times you can make the same joke until it stops being funny.

But Lemmy users are only going to post, and only going to upvote, the same sorts of stuff that interests them. How is that different from Lemmy users posting their own writing?

It's different because their own writing is tailor made for them, whereas with external publications they have to choose from what's there.

It's funny how users like you always complain about "echo chambers" and "US centrism", as if you don't have the very same opportunities to post the content you want to see. Don't like the post? Downvote and move on. Want something different? Then do your part. Sitting around whining about other users not hand feeding you your preferred content is so wildly selfish.

Block me and any other source than the onion; that way you’ll have much fewer articles, and can have the diversity of just one source for them.
