So while it sounds like a trap, this might also be real. It allows deportation without due process. This exact thing happened during Dwight D Eisenhower’s presidency to the letter, bonuses and everything. It’s much cheaper and easier to bulk deport if you can convince them to leave by themselves and by making life hell. Extra History JUST put out a video about the Eisenhower thing on September 1.

While I'm not 100% on it being a trap, we're in an unprecedented "the cruelty is the point" era that we've never really faced before. If someone I knew was considering calling the line, I would do everything I could to prevent them from trying it.

You're not 100%? ICE habitually shows up at official visa appointments to disappear applicants, et al, without explanation nor consequence, and you think this brand-name scam might maybe be legit?! Thafuq?

Calm down Buster Brown. We're in agreement. Whether it's 90% sure or 100% doesn't matter, the facts are the same, no need to come at me so strong.

Frankly? I'm quietly curious if the US is gonna hold it together long enough for me to enjoy the Left Coast once again —or if it'll fray itself to ribbons before I can log this drive back to it. 🥲

I was thinking more or less the same thing - if you are here illegally it's probably both cheaper and easier to pay you $1k per person and a free flight back whence you came than to track you down, go through the legal process, and remove you against your will.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Forget the "legal" process (which is skipped). I wouldn't be surprised if just the salaries of all the ICE officers and the cost of their operations is significantly more than $1000 per immigrant captured.

The cost of the flight is probably not really saved either because they have to physically deport the ones they've captured anyway.

And yet I still think it's a trap. Call me a cynic.
