They don't ever seem to bother him or anyone else that walks by.

My neighbor had one like this in his tree, bald face hornets. He would mow under it and do yardwork, they never bothered him. However, me across the street got stung on two separate occasions before I asked to split the cost of an exterminator because those bastards kept stinging me in the face. I hate killing things but I hate being stung more.

I have an uncontrollable fear reaction around wasps, they sense it, they get scared and then defensive, it's a nice vicious cycle.

I have a theory that animals perceive fear and anger as the same emotion. Since with most animals whenever they get scared they lash out and attack things.

So they see you scared and react so you dont attack them. Its just unfortunate for them since we can remember and retaliate.

I don't think they are the same, but I do know they perceive fear as a threat for the reason you laid out. They may react to them the same way, but even then they seem to have limits on that.

Bald face hornets are extra scary. One of their tools is spraying venom into an animals eyes, leaving them temporarily blind
