Americans are struggling financially, grappling with debt and the rising cost of living, and are blaming the Trump administration and corporate interests for worsening economic outlooks for working families, according to a new poll.

Six out of 10 Americans place blame on the Trump administration for driving up their cost of living, according to a poll conducted by Morning Consult for the Century Foundation, which asked 2,007 Americans how they are managing the high cost of living in the US economy, who they think is to blame and what are the solutions.

Sixty three per cent said Trump had had a negative impact on grocery prices, and 61% said he had had a negative impact on the cost of living. Nearly half, 49%, said the Trump administration had had a negative impact on their finances. Nearly eight out of 10 Americans, including 70% of Republicans, fear that Trump’s tariffs will increase the price of everyday goods.

I guess you don't know what consumerism means, or you're not willing to admit its drawbacks because you're a part of it.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Are you implying you don’t take part in consumerism?

[–] haloduder@thelemmy.club 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

No, but I contribute to it at a level that we all can participate in so I'm not part of the problem.

If you're implying that I have to go live off in the woods or something to criticize consumerism, then you're just looking for excuses to not consume less. You've been conditioned to believe it's "all or nothing," so any mitigation of your contribution doesn't matter.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So you take part in consumerism but you aren't part of the problem. It's the others who take part in consumerism that are the problem. Because you consume at an acceptable level and others at unacceptable levels. I'm not sure how you are evaluating how much I or others are consuming, nor do I understand how you decided what is excessive in your little purity test but since you seem so excited to win a debate nobody is having, I'm certain you'll follow this up with something more than "muusemuuse wouldn't understand."

I'm not going to assume that you are exceptional when you haven't given me any reason to. Thus far, everything you've said is typical of people defending consumerism without any regard to magnitude.

Trying to argue that 'there's no ethical consumption' (which I assume you believe) is a tactic you people use to avoid admitting how you're part of the problem or that you can take steps to solve it. If I were to go live out in the woods, then you can point at me and say "See!? Either we spend as much money and consume as much as we can or live in the woods like a crazy person! There's no in between!"

It's not a purity test. You're looking for any reason to make it seem like the person ordering doordash everyday is contributing to the problem at the same level as the person cooking their own meals every day. That's not true and you're going to get upset at me for pointing this out because it causes your cognitive dissonance to flare up.

You aren’t going to assume I’m exceptional but you have no problem assuming I’m the opposite. Most people are in that grey area in between. I’m not concerned with how you evaluate my character. I am incredibly entertained that you seem to think your opinion of me has any value.

Yes... I have no problem assuming that you are average. Thus far you responded exactly how I expect your ilk to respond. You plug your ears to truths you don't like so you don't have to think about how your consumption habits can and should change.

If you valued my opinion of you, then I would have a higher opinion of you. I don't expect that of you though, which is part of why you're average.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

this is exactly what narcissism looks like.

[–] haloduder@thelemmy.club 0 points 4 hours ago

If you're talking about yourself, then yes.

You're incapable of recognizing when you're wrong because your ego can't handle it.
