He knows, he's just pretending not to know because he doesn't like the joke. Poland was always on the outskirts of Europe and in many aspects it's closer to Russia than EU. Many people in Western Europe simply forget that Poland is part of EU and think about it more like about Ukraine. This used to be even more obvious and Poles had inferiority complex but now that they finally had caught up a little bit while the West deteriorated they suddenly feel real good about themselves and pretend not to remember what it was like 10 years ago.

Every Pole (I am one by the way) I know would never ever equate Poland to Russia. And it's hard to accept your nonsense that they're not closer to the EU when Poland is literally a member state in the EU.
Poles also don't typically talk shit about their own country to outsiders.
Well, self-depreciation used to be something of a national pastime. Especially before joining the EU. Can't really deny that. We came through a lot as a nation and it shows.
We are slowly getting over that though. In some cases unfortunately we begin to overcompensate as well. We'll get over it I suppose.
Masz rację, że Polska jest w dupie ze społecznym postępem. Przez lata był w zasadzie tylko kosmetyczny. Teraz dodatkowo dokonał się zwrot wstecz. Nie ma się z czego cieszyć. Jedynego plusa można doszukiwać się w tym, że konserwy się boją. To dlatego tak mocno się zorganizowali i walczą. Przestraszyli się zalążka zmian i ładnych parę lat temu rozpoczęli kontratak. To znaczy, że zmiana choć była mała, to zauważalna szczególnie dla nich.
Ile z obecnej sytuacji to wina Polaków, a ile jest jej w ogólnie zorganizowanych grupach ksenofobicznych, ciężko powiedzieć. Widać, że trend rozwija się w tej chwili nie tylko tutaj, ale również na zachodzie. Działa tu na pewno więcej, niż nasze "podwórko".
Nie działam politycznie, ale staram się wytykać i prostować złe zachowania kiedy jestem ich świadkiem w życiu codziennym. To nie dużo, ale wydaje mi się że takich ludzi jest coraz więcej i mam nadzieję, że to wspomaga chociaż trochę zmiany w tym kraju.
Publiczne samobiczowanie się w ramach np. pokazywania pożałowania wywodzenia się z tej czy innej narodowości psychicznie pomaga. Uwidacznia, że nie godzisz się z obecnym stanem rzeczy. Niestety poza tym nie wnosi nic pozytywnego. Umacnia tylko właśnie stereotyp naszego narodowego kompleksu mniejszości. Umniejsza w oczach ludzi z innych krajów starania sporej części społeczeństwa, która chce go zmienić. Utrudnia tą pracę.
Życzę powodzenia Tobie i Twoim przyjaciołom. Obyśmy mogli kiedyś cieszyć się tym krajem.
Zauważę tylko, że zaczęło się od żartu, że Polska jest w Europie tylko z technicznego punktu widzenia. Nie wiem czy ktoś poza paroma polakami ten komentarz w ogóle zauważył, co dopiero przeanalizował i zinterpretował jako samobiczowanie czy cokolwiek innego. Mi za to nie chce się analizować co może być źródłem takiego przerważliwienia. Czasem trzeba po protu trochę się wyluzować.
